I stopped feeding birds some years ago as it encouraged magpies and crows and they frightened off the smaller birds. Then squirrels became a proper pest and nothing I tried could stop them pinching all the food.

I only feed sunflower hearts no magpies/crows come, sparrows and the odd finch and lots of goldfinch, i did have three squirrels two years ago they was causing too much damage and had to go,

My small pond has been a haven for birds watering/bathing hole busy all day long :),

Another way ive dealt with rats is with two paving slabs one laid flat and the other propped up with a stick and a long bit of string, bait the paving slab laid flat and wait for the culprit to start feeding pull the sting and it will kill the rat instant.

I think we're talking at cross purposes. I mentioned that some councils have stated that you can't do it. They can do this under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 as it fits within the current laws. The old and still standing part of the law says that you can't shoot within 50ft of a public highway (which is usually not a problem) if it may cause a nuisance. "If falling shot, or birds, or noise, alarm a lawful user of the public highway and shooting is taking place within 50 feet of the road, an offence is committed"

As it happens I do know what I'm doing and have been shooting for 60 years and, in the past, I always successfully shot the field rats if they were on the bird table. I'm sure you didn't mean to make your sentence sound the way it does! :)

I used to shoot when i was young, but i draw a line with being shoot at and this was an organized shoot, the field they were in was at the corner of our garden (two corners together) and the centre of pond was only 150 yards away from house (the far end of garden) and a 12 bore can fire 300 yard + and what's more our neighbours had a young child there at the time (1 year old) and they were as far way as we were and that didn't stop them, people just don't think, even when i had a go at them they said they weren't firing towards the house so i said "explain this" pellets in my hand:doh:he went very q t
so after the 3rd time (and some other times when something landed in the garden but couldn't be sure) of have pellets and duck we phone the land owner and got the wife and she but a stop to it there and then :dbgrtmb:

Are the rats eating your veg or just looking for water/moisture as it's so dry, if they're looking for moisture put out a water bowl away from your veg :sofa:

I don't think they are actually eating my veg, the courgettes and peppers have been nibbled with the nibbled off bits left on the ground, so they are looking for food or like you say maybe water. Same with the tomatoes, nibbled but not eaten - they have just stuck their teeth into them one by one! So you could be right, although I do have a tiny pond in the patch with frogs. Rats could drink from that I guess. Must go and check the pond now you mention it in case it's dropped too low :blue thumb:

Just thought I will pull up all my leafy veg and compost - spinach, lettuce etc - don't want to catch weil's disease.

You shouldn't be shooting on bird tables you should be shooting safely with a back stop and no chance of a ricoshade,

Have a read here Shiney this applies to the whole of England not certain areas.

Yes we have got crossed purposes, i am keeping on track talking about grown adults dealing with vermin,

You are talking about young kids/adults who have no gun safety knowledge firing pellets anywhere two different circumstances keep on topic .

Be careful handling the pond water.

I was also referring to adults using rifles for shooting vermin and pointing out that some local authorities don't allow it even if it's not expressly banned by other laws.

Local authorities, under the civil law that I quoted have fined people for having untidy front gardens! I was merely pointing out that people need to be aware of their local regulations.

Yes I do know the guidelines for use of firearms and I no longer possess a rifle that is capable of shooting outside of my property (unless I stand near the boundary and aim recklessly). :blue thumb: My days of 22 and 308 use are long gone (last used them in Africa 56 years ago!) but I do still possess an air rifle.

When I used to shoot the rats (with the air rifle) they were in such a position that the shot could not reach my boundaries and the backdrop was 40+ trees fenced in on my own land. Behind that, although the shot could not reach that far, is a 40 acre field. At the distances involved a ricochet could not travel to the boundary or reach back to me. :)

                      Your first comment was.

The law remains the same rural/urban

No its not gun laws are gun laws

Councils can advise you not to shoot and it could be a breach of council owned houses, but they cant change gun laws, if you use a gun in a proper safe way around your own garden no one can do anything,

At the end of the day common sense plays a big part if you have any doubts about what your doing stay clear shooting rabbits at 60ft with a old rifle is certainly not good practice.
