I had forgotten about Jeremy Taylor's song.
But now that you mention it, although it came out before I was born, I remember my parents would listen to the now long gone Springbok Radio and it would be played on there.

Of course as a young lad, I hated Springbok Radio as it was for "toppies" (older folk), preferring to listen to Radio 5 which was born out of the old L.M. radio.

I'm intrigued, how do you know about the song?

I was working in South Africa in the early 60's (worked for Union Castle) when Jeremy Taylor became famous for the song in 1961.

I've still got my original copy of the record and the other side of the record is Jo'burg Talking Blues. In later years, when re-recording the song he cleaned it up a bit. :heehee:

He got kicked out of S.A. for writing those songs!

He is also the person who invented the word Jobsworth when he wrote a song of that name.

That would explain why you know the song. :)

When we moved to South Africa (1974), my dad worked for Safmarine.

Hang on to it, can't be too many of those floating around these days and must be worth a few bob especially now with the resurgence of vinyl records.

I grew up listening to the likes of Clout, Ballyhoo along with other international bands.
Some were banned like Pink Floyd due to their song "Another brick in the wall" and Eddy Grant's "Give me hope Joanna".

I wondered what happened to him.
In those days, the government took paranoia to a whole new level.

      Didn't know that.
      Learnt something new today.

Yes, there were a number of rats on the ship but the ship's cat was good at finding and killing them. He was a BIG cat (not lion type big cat :heehee:).

Either the rat is so big, Dave, that it's filling the picture completely or it's a blank!!:heehee:

They've been running "super rat" stories since the 1970's Gimme Freezer Rats any day :)

Like Wooly Mammoths but without the tusks :)
