If you can find a rat hole, stick a hosepipe into it and flood them out, that will shift them, but do not drowned them this is illegal, you could face a summons if caught. Our council do not have a rodent officer any more ,so you have to hire a private contractor,£50 for 3 visit's.But what has been said on here you can buy bait boxes which have a hole for them to get in with a compartment inside that you put in your poison. We on our own allotment sight have someone who comes round to your plot and will lay poison etc for you ,no charge. When I can catch him I will ask what boxes and poison he use's and where to get it.

      Random Rat Stuff.

Rats are Neophobic, which means they don't like smart dressed R&B singers.

Rats have to gnaw, as their teeth don't stop growing.

Rats need to eat meat, they can't survive on a vegi diet.

I some times wonder about the people that make laws like being able to poison rats but not drown them.

Yet if you abuse a little old lady it takes a Panorama program to get the police to act?

That's why we've stopped donating to the RSPCA. We are plagued with gulls too and yet they are not considered vermin.
Thanks everyone for your slant on this. We do have a Rodent/Pest Control guy who manages these green boxes on site. I am sad to have to stop feeding the birds more than anything,

                  Crazy.
I would have thought that rats are classified as vermin and the authorities would be glad to see their numbers decrease drastically and rapidly.
Luckily outrageous laws like that haven't reached here yet.

I love the rats  They're intelligent, resourceful and nowhere near as bad as people think they are. We have had them in our garden for almost 3 years. They eat the bird food and the hedgehogs food and the occasional snack I give them. We had a couple spend the winter in the attic but I think they've vacated now to the garden. I've even got a wild rat as a pet. I found him in the garden last year. He was about 3-4 weeks old and had been attacked by something. I didn't think he would survive as the head injury he had was causing fitting. But with some treatment and a bit of tlc from me he did. He has been left with a permanent head tilt and is blind in one eye, so not a candidate for being returned to the garden. He lives with 2 of my fancy rats and is one of the most gentle, nice natured rats I've had. He takes food so politely when its offered - except when there is somse of mamma's homemade chocolate and peanut butter fudge to be had, in which case he becomes quite feral :snork:

Please do not poison the rats, its a horrible way to die. And when they do start to die they will drop all over the place and not always out of sight so you don't have to deal with it. My neighbour decided to posion rats and they came in to my garden to die. It was most unpleasant to deal with. Apart from that its not only the rat you end up poisoning sometimes. If anything else eats a rat who has died from posion then it will be posioned too. There is no antidote. If you really feel you cannot co-exist with the rats then there are other non lethal ways of persuading them to leave.
