Hello again everyone, I know it is not cookies because I clear them regularly and update a lot of security etc on site daily. I have just downloaded 26 updates for Windows containing a lot of security issues and guess what it seems to have cured the problem. I hate to breathe freely for fear it will collapse but it hasn't so far so it does seem as though my problems are over. Thank you all for all your help. If only I had realized it would be that simple because my Microsoft updates all the time but somewhere along the line when I have done restores to the system I have lost those important updates but now this is straight to the site with no notepad so it must have sorted the problems. Sayinmg a little word upstairs to thank him for my patience and for sticking with it. I knew it should be something simple because it couldn't just happen like that. Well I can breathe freely again. It's wonderful being able to just type and it stays there!!

Zigs, You can close your office file on my problems now. But it is interesting to know that some thing that simple could cure it. Thanks once again for all your patience with me nagging and moaning about it but it certainly has been frustrating.

Yes, It's brilliant isn't it? But thanks ever so much for all attempts to help me. Incredible to think something so simple could resolve the problem. Absolutely brilliant.

Nah, it had to be something arguing with something else ... the tricky bit was finding what needed to be upgraded to stop it arguing ... which you've now done :blue thumb:. Process of elimination - its always pleasing when the first thing you try fixes the problem ... but so would buying the winning lottery ticket!

There is one thing I still cannot understand is why it was only this site affected? Surely those windows security updates should have in theory affected all my websites I use but didn't. This site must be a bit more discerning.

This site uses some very fancy, modern, programming. All the things that happen without the page completely refreshing requires pretty much all the tricks in the books. A lot more opportunity for something elsewhere to not behave.

most sites you click on something and you get a complete page refresh. That means that things like LIKE would not really be viable.

Each page is constantly phoning-home to check if you have new posts of interest, or personal messages ... that type of thing requires all the ancillary to be up to date, and stresses browsers more as they all vary, and those variations can cause incompatibilities (bane of my life, wish we just had one browser, and only one version of it! we'd be far more productive and spend far less time in Testing and working-around gotchas in one brand / version or another :( )

of course competition is a good thing in other ways, but the bugs / inconsistencies in browsers that we have to work around are significant. Might be that you just hit some combination of those, which Windows Update has now downloaded suitable fix(es) for.

Good idea that folk recommend that as a first remedy for anyone having problems in future though.

Yes, I shall certainly remember it for future reference. I mean I had already updated things like Java and drivers so it just was a process of elimination once we knew it was contained to this set up here.
