The biggest pumpkin now measures 39" round and still growing! and four smaller ones about half that size so am very soon going to be making apple and pumpkin crumble, Dalbuie.

Also heard you can make pumpkin jam - any recipes please?

Jjordie I am sorry missed your message:

Try this for a Tomatoe sauce from my gran (heinz eat your heart out - this is the real stuff) ate it as a child, and it tastes the same as an adult.

6 lbs tomatoes washed and cut
    2 large onions cut up
    4 tablespoons sugar
    4 bay leaves
    1 desert spoon all spice
1 dessert spoon of pepper corns
    1 desert spoon salt
    1 pint of vinegar
    Few sprigs of parsley

Boil the lot for at least an hour, strain thooughtly. Add a litte cornflour, and boil up again if not thick enough

    Sweet chutney

    1 lb apples - chopped
1 lb of onions - chopped
    1/2 lb tomatoes - chopped
1/2 lb of brown sugar (slightly less)
1 lb of dates - sliced
    1/2 pint of vinegar

Boil all together until soft - make 4 1 lb jam jars. Sultanas can be used in place of dates

    Fran

pete2255 you could stew the fruit, let it go cold mix with some whipped cream add some sugar to your own taste and you have a lovely mousse [IMG]

YEEESSS, not exactly the flavour of the month are they, so I've got to let them start to rot before they're edibile.
Think I might just let them stay on the tree for the birds. :D

I buy half coconut shells filled with what looks like fat of some kind mixed with seeds etc, for the birds in the garden. I now have lots of empty shells.
Anyone got a recipe for the mixture to replace the filling.
Birds are mostly blackbirds (they come to the kitchen windowsill every morning for their sultanas) robins, and little sparrows.

Try having a look at www.gardenbird.com. They sell half coconuts, but handily tell you that each contains 300g of high energy suet mixed with seeds and nuts. I think their code for half coconuts is NV01

If you can wait a bit longer, my neighbour, a bona fide, happy-clappy, god fearin' Texan, is going to pass me her recipe for pumpkin pie - and having tasted it on numerous occasions, it's worth waiting for. Will post it as soon as I get it.
