Just started using old cork table mats, as a local sun shield over propagators to keep off direct sunshine. Worked so far, just hope for more practice with the sun!

Recycling is becoming a neccessity with landfill sites becoming full. Not to mention water shortage particularly in the SE. In this area gardening waste [not mine] is collected and recycled. But we have become a throw away nation myself included. I read a post by Liz a few weeks ago about loo roll center's and others who use them. I have been throwing mine away since I left Primary School, now my sweet peas are in them.

For the last year I have been recycling those clear plastic tops that come with the drum of 50 blank CD's

I use it instead of those awful plastic bags and rubber bands on top of the pots for cuttings.

The size nicely fits a half pot, better for cuttings anyway which I purchased from Kays Horticultural.

Yes, I do use a lot of blank CD's!

you must do! good idea, though! I keep all the take-away containers nowadays - they come in nice see-thru plastic containers with lids here - and, like DAG -- yes, I do use them a lot!! The delivery bloke calls me pal and discusses gardening with me!! Sad! [IMG]

And how about those spray on household cleaners? Washed out the empty bottle and spray head makes a great mister or bug gun.

I use the copper wire from old electric cable stapled along the top of raised beds to stop slugs. The job of removing the wire from the rubber is a bit tedious but well worth the effort.

Good one mistys, I like that!

I assume then that copper works for you?

That's a good idea, mistys! I use unravelled copper scouring pads, also a fiddle but very cheap- I've been putting it round individual containers. Slugs always find an overhanging leaf or branch touching something else- it's a nonstop battle...... :(

Yes, Dag, the copper wire seems to work well on my four raised beds. Protecting the rest of the plot is a bit more tricky though, I have a couple of ideas to try out this season, will post if successful.

Lakeland are very good at customer service - my mum gets a lot of stuff from them, and if she's ever not happy with something they usually refund her, send something else instead, sacrifice their firstborn etc ;)

That's what I like to hear, a bit of servility, instead of the usual 'there's no demand for that, madam' over something I've just demanded! :D
