I'd also put solar panels in between the sky lights on the roof. And I'd get rid of the old broadloom on the second floor and have hardwood laid to match the main floor. Including laying the planks on a 45 degree in the rooms and on the straight in the hall. And.. let's see how many years of 30K is that?
We are having the exterior of the house painted next month, but are fancying buying a Chevrolet El Camino to replace the Estate ... Sadly they are virtually impossible to find in Europe.
Strangely we just watched the new The Chase (2 meters apart, plastic partitions, etc) and the one person said she would take the family to Bombay???? Now ???? She and one other got caught and two won £15,000 between them (to go to The Ashes in Aussie and down payment on house).
Re-decorating (in the cosmetic update sense, excluding necessary renovations) regularly would be a horrible hassle. Then again, if you have 30K annually for the purpose, you probably have several homes or at least enough space to escape the mess. If I got that sum earmarked for cosmetic updates, I would buy Eero Aarnio's chairs. They are absolutely brilliant to sit in and look magical. In real life it's a tin of paint from Wilkos to cover the worst scruffiness. With all walls painted white it's not too challenging job.
A true story. Sort of relative. We had friends in Bucks (we secretly called her Laura Ashley). She did not work. Work, what's that? She redecorated more frequently than yearly at times. They renovated their home the first year but she soon tired of the new kitchen ... so out it came and new double-size in. Kids had ponies, motor bikes at prior teen ages. She drove a Range Rover. Bought a camera lens costing £600 c2000. She divorced husband (plasterer) and married kitchen builder and they moved to small semi. He suddenly died at work of heart attack making tea aged 35. She married plumber who she quickly divorced and came to visit us here. Last we heard she was unattached and working as a Teaching Assistant in a Primary School and did not have all the "necessities" she had to have in previous lives. Shame .....
She seems to be working her way through the tradesmen, must be an electricians turn next ! Also we have just watched the same show on the chase, very close at the end.
In terms of 'painting & decorating' it's easy to understand why the French don't! crap paint at easily 4 times the price of UK Dulux, 10 times the price of Wilko's. Plus, historically, they were taxed on appearance, which explains the resemblance of so many French villages to a collection of pigsties It's changing, gradually, especially in Brit enclaves where (pre-Brexit) there was a thriving black market in UK paint I was always fascinated by the idea of wallpapering the door to match the walls. Bet that caused some interesting situations after a few apéros.....
@noisette47 You are welcome @Victoria Sadly there are a lot of people with certain expectations. Even sadder - lots of them have lost touch with reality and are too easily influenced by friends, family, commercials or Facebook/Instagram/Twitter. Most people have neither the money nor the time to chase every trend and new fashion that comes out every other year. Especially if it's a costly one. I know a few people who are chasing trends because they try to fit in with their friends. One even took on a second job just to please all his wife's expectations who doesn't even work, but shopping and entertainment are expensive if you have to entertain yourself for the whole day. So yeah, you can easily pay 30k for decorating (a new set of furniture ever other year and there you go).
We've been married 56 years and are on a second set of furniture. So there's at least another 25 years to go before we looking at changing it.
