The only problem with pay per mile (which Sad-Dick Khan ultimately wants to use the ULEZ cameras for, is that they will still charge you VED, Fuel Duty, VAT and IPT as well.

2025 the existing ULEZ and ANPR network will collect 'an amount' for the miles you drive as they will be able to track you wherever you go in greater London; the exact amount has not been revealed yet, but you can bet it won't be a few pennies and it will apply to all vehicles including EV's.

If more local things are to be looked at, ie. parking charges and basically making life as difficult as possible, it just alienates places and its responsible for the death of town shopping centres.
London and other big cities will become ghost towns, nobody will want to live in these places apart from the super rich and the really poor.

Probably why all new housing down my way is going to Londoners, they are deserting a sinking ship.

Exactly. We are desperate to get as far away from here as possible and I know for sure that at least two of our neighbours are wanting out too (one had their house valued just this week); we are in Surrey, so don't get a vote in the mayoral elections, but we are less than a mile from the London boundary so are all affected by his nonsense.

Edinburgh are talking about introducing a charge to enter the city (no price as yet). I live about 400 yds from the boundary so will have to pay every time I want to cross it. This means the hospital, dentist, some shopping and step-daughter's. I am 4 miles from the city centre and urban all the way. However, South Queensferry, which is 12 miles from the city centre and out in the country is considered part of Edinburgh (because it has the bridges?) and people from there do not have to pay. small balls.

The thing is, we already DO pay per mile in fuel duty and VAT - even if you have and EV, there is VAT charged on the energy.
All of this is about one thing and one thing only - money. You only have to look at the profits being made by the likes of Centrica to see that.

And yet, OPEC forecasts demand for oil will increase by 23% by 2045. So by 2045 consumption of oil will be 130 million barrels a day.

Because every country, other than those who are about to throw themselves off an eco-cliff are going to carry on regardless. China being one of the main ones. We could switch everything off tomorrow, including all cars etc and any tiny impact we would make would be wiped out by China's increase within two years.

Unfortunately for me, Edinburgh is my "local". As I said, I am only 4 miles from the city centre and 400 yds from the charge boundary.

I think that is the point with all these schemes, there will always be people on the edges that get no benefit from them, have no say in them but are as effected by them as those inside.
It all needs rethinking, but as they are cash cows for local government I think its only a matter of time before every town in the country has this kind of set up.

God knows, they cant even get the parking right with the cameras they use so this kind of thing is just going to be full of disputes, even Dartford tunnel is saying the technology isn't working properly this week and people have to go online and pay the toll.

I don't know whether the Dartford Tunnel online system is still the same but if you have an account with them (money deposited) and don't use it for a certain amount of time they tell you they are going to close your account. The way that is best handled, unless they have changed the system, is to add £10 to the system, wait a short while for it to be acknowledged and then withdraw the £10.
