I think 10 x 8 is a better size, apart from it just being bigger! When I got my first greenhouse I wanted the 12 x 10 - which was the largest, affordable, greenhouse that Eden made, but it was outside my budget and I went for 10 x 8 instead. I think that gives you enough width for staging, 3' either side) (whereas the 4' either side on 12 x 10 is quite hard to reach the back of), and also, critically, I think at 10 x 8 you can get good airflow for cooling, and I think its the pivot point size between being able to control cooling easily and having to use brute force!

Unless too late I recommend 4x roof vents (although 3x vents would do) and a louvre lower down. With the exception of heatwave days you will be able to get convection cooling by opening louvre and vents which is much less aggressive (e.g. on transpiration) than chucking the door open to get forced, draughty, ventilation.

I don't use automatic openers for the vents, but if you work shifts or are away a lot (or off-early and home-late) then they are a boon. I prefer to open on side opposite the wind, and to leave them open ajar during the summer (and this year, after JWK suggested it, I'm leaving them fully open at night to help reduce moulds - until nights start falling below 10C)

According to the spec on the Eden website, it has four roof vents (although for some reason the Argos spec shows one, despite showing four in their picture), and my understanding is that it has one louvre window also.

I probably will invest in auto-openers next year, as well as some decent staging (guess what I am asking Santa for this year?), and I have already got the routing organised for the extension cable where it can be pretty much left in position and not get in anybody's way.

Before it comes, I am going to lift and level the patio slabs (they slope off at the back end at the moment), and apply new grout so that I have a good, sound, clean surface to work with.

    Sounds excellent!

Probably obvious, but in case not:
    • Slope slightly to the end where water butt will be
    • Door at the end opposite prevailing wind (if you have a choice)
    • Make 100000% sure that the diagonals of your base are identical - before you try to start glazing!

I don't have a choice where the door is I'm afraid, but thankfully there is naturally a slight slope toward what will be the back end of the greenhouse. I'm not going to be able to put a water butt in until I move my shed (need to swing it round 90 degrees, and also level the patio underneath).

By diagonals, I assume that you mean to check that the base is sitting properly square with 90 degree angles at each corner?

Someone has just given us an Aladdin Treble 0 One 333 series parrafin greenhouse heater. We don't want it so it's going free if anyone wants to collect it. We're between junction 7 and 8 on the M11.

I just Googled to see what sort of price they are. It appears to be an older model but in good condition and an American site was selling one for $340!!!!!!!

This is another one here in England.

Where have you heard that moyra?

Its funny you should mention it, I said to my mum earlier that I had a feeling that we were in for a long, cold and probably snowy winter this year.
