Picked our first tomatoes of the year, I guess I am some distance behind folk living further south, I should keep records to see if there's any changes from year to year.

Well I'm in the south (of Wales) and you're doing better than me! I have picked very few. Probably started too late. Your greenhouse looks full!

If they all ripen I think this year could be my best ever with tomatoes, to balance that however, almost all my leeks have gone to seed, so you win some and lose some with this heat.

Having a look at the crops and also a bit of a taste test in the headless gardeners greenhouse. Just click on the link and switch on the sound for the commentary if you like.

I like to grow crops that are not always grown under glass, with that in mind, I went to the hospital for my CT scan and when we returned the postie had delivered my bare root Strawberry plants I ordered a while ago and forgot they were coming. Some of the old Mara de Bois have been confined to the compost bin and some pots and one of the window boxes now have Flamenco in them, perpetuals like before. I have also sowed two dozen Onward Peas in cells in the propagator for another bash at growing peas in the greenhouse for an early crop, I shall also be growing radish, lettuce and carrots inside the greenhouse in the borders, again for early crops. I had mixed success with the carrots last time, so going to try a different variety.

It was minus 6 inside my greenhouse last night, but the Onions inside the blowaway look ok, just need to be careful watering in these temps. I got a bit of a bargain yesterday, 3 bags of farmyard manure, 3 bags of compost and a bag of 6X all for £35 pounds, so I'm ready to go once the weather sorts it's self out.

I always do things outside of the box so to speak, in the past I grew some Sweetpeas in the Greenhouse, got a bumper crop of long, straight stemmed flowers for the house more than a month earlier than outside and the greenhouse smells superb. Sowed some a few weeks ago and have just planted then in the border soil in a spare spot that will not be needed until the Melons grow like triffids and take over, by then they will be past their best and the ones in the garden will be in full flow.

The first video of this season, talking about compost and potting and generally getting the season off to a start. Click on the link and there's sound too, hope you enjoy it.

I've connected up one of the roof windows to the automatic opener, although we had a frost over night, the suns out and it's over 20 degrees in there, I'll connect the other one later.
