I absolutely agree Verdun but the problem with things like fruit/veg is that they vary so much unlike your example of an air freshener whereby ok you may not know how it smells the 1st time you buy it but you do know the next purchase will be identical.
I bought some Nectarines the other day and they were gorgeous. I bought another dose 3 days ago and they were decidedly so so. I'm not advocating that I should have been able to take a bite out of 1 before purchase:) but something small like a Cherry especially whereby if you eat 1 it doesn't affect the rest (unlike taking grapes off a bunch) doesn't seem a big deal.
I'm not sure what the answer is, I'm sure the supermarkets will have done plenty of this  in the past and failed to find a suitable solution.
If they do come up with a solution, 1 thing I know for sure is the end user of everything will be paying for it! My late father was involved in a particular chain of supermarkets. I was completely flabbergasted when he told me the mark up on products to allow for pilferage (I think the term used is shrinkage:rolleyespink:). It wasn't shoplifters that were the main protagonists it was the supermarket employees who were responsible for the mass thefts and I expect this situations isn't just supermarkets!

Shrinkage! I like it, great term. I have occasionally been in a supermarket late at night and the shrinkage is incredible. People wandering the aisles openly eating crisps, fruit, chocolate bars. Half drunk bottles of juice left lying on shelves etc. Disgusting. Once watched in absolute awe as two women walked out of the store with a shopping trolley piled high but not paid for. Security guard just shrugged as they strolled past and waited at the door for their get away vehicle to arrive. Once they had unloaded into the car they didn't even put their trolley away :yikes::lunapic 130165696578242 5:

I do that often, especially if I've been emptying compost out at the plot or shovelling/bagging horse manure on the way to the store. Or when I've been sea fishing and then I normally take a nail brush to help scrub my hands before handling food (or beer).

Go into Boots the Chemist of a weekend and there's normally loads of teenagers trying out the likes of 'fragrances' etc. on the shelves, leaving partly used bottles for others to buy (if unawares).

That is really stupid, checking something's OK then buying another one, serve them right if they found it was broken when they opened it.

Is that the same as people that go in specifically to use the free deodorant tester.

On another point how many shoppers put their unwrapped fruit, veg etc. into bags - I do. The reason being those parents that insist on standing their children in shopping trolleys, not thinking about where the children have been walking or what they've walked in!

My wife is a fork bender (don't tell anyone). If she can bend a fork she deems it unworthy to buy.

I remember him at the battle of Thermopylae. I'd just popped over from Delphi hoping to go for a swim in the sea but, in the circumstances, I made myself scarce. :blue thumb:

I saw someone in Morrisons shaking the boxes of cornflakes - I assume to try and determine which contained the crispest flakes - either that or it was some kind of weird fetish :rolleyespink:

I too never buy from open food displays :spinning:.

Well, it could be argued that the consumers who squeeze are at the very end of the potential "health" concerns ;)
Watch a French/Spanish/German/other nationalities are available choose their fruit and vegetables ... having a squeeze is par for the course.
How about ... those dog walkers who do not pick up and let their animals defecate over crops in the field? Or urinate? Or, maybe, the foxes/badgers/rabbits/voles/mice/cats etc who do likewise? :dunno:
Then again, who's to say the fruit pickers have the highest hygiene standards? Or, even, the trailers which those goods are packed into? :noidea:
Taking it a little bit further, how about pre-packaged fruit and veg: is that more, or less, likely to be "sanitary"? :dunno: The assumption might well be that it is ... but you can't be certain.

Goes back to good old fashioned house-keeping I suppose: wash everything ;) (Or, was I the only person taught to do that? :dunno: ) :heehee:

I thought 'wash' was a four letter word! So tend to keep away from that! :snorky:

Supermarkets account for the 'tasting' of food in their pricing. In general it brings them in more sales as most people who taste the grapes (for example) end up buying a bunch. In the old days :old: :heehee: when I had my greengrocery stall in the market it was quite normal for people to want to taste things before buying (they had to ask as I was standing there). It certainly helped to promote sales.

Good food and kitchen hygiene should solve any problems.

I'm more concerned, nowadays, about the chemicals that are used when growing, or preparing the food for transport (where they use cleansers and inhibitors), than the handling of the food.
