The latest thing around here seems to be to fill empty 2 litre soft drink bottles with water and lay those around the garden - the theory is, so I'm told, that the sun reflecting off the surface somehow deters cats. I've no idea whether or not this works since, having spoken to a couple of neighbours, they confessed they didn't actually have a cat problem to begin with! My Father once spent a small fortune on those cat shaped cutouts - the things which you stick in the ground and which are supposed to look like a cat with reflective eyes? - his neighbour's cat thought it had found a new friend and would curl up next to it for a doze!

I find the thing which works best for me is to either lay a piece of fairly fine mesh wire netting over the ground or, for smaller areas, a few twigs with some cotton strung between them.

A curry plant works, not sure of any other names for them. We bought a couple for our neighbours as my cats were using their graveled area as a giant cat litter box. They dont like the smell and so far seem to have stayed away.

I don't think the water bottles would work on my cats - they would be trying to work out how to open them to get the water out. One of my cats chases anything sparkly.

These guys specialise in products designed to keep cats away http://www.deteracat.co.uk/index.htm

Dobbies sell Silent Roar Cat Deterrant - big cat poop soaked pellets to sprinkle around.
