White or pale pink with a burgundy clematis would be classy:wub2: Or a yellow rose with pale-ish blue clematis....

It was me that wasn't happy with white Freddy. :) Here's some contrasts for you, just the colours not these particular plants.

How many uprights have you got to play with, if it's not a personal question?

Viticella 'dark eyes' would be great with a yellow climbing rose Freddy.

Basically, two, as one is already earmarked for a Wisteria and the rest are a bit shaded. The uprights are around 5ft apart (probably should have been closer, but a bit late now).

I found Cirrhosa Freckles doesn`t really ''pack a punch'' it looks better in an advertisement than it does in real life.

And I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that viticellas tolerate shade. Honeysuckles do too.;)

Let's look at this another way. What's the aspect Freddy? Will the pergola be in a bright spot in your garden as that will make a difference to the colours you choose. For instance Burgundy will look dull in shade or a northern aspect of the garden.

Just to add @noisette47 , the plan is to have both the rose and Clematis on the same upright.

The planned position will be sunny, most of the time, garden is west facing.
