Good evening Joolz my friend Ena Harkness is a sport, in the old days when I was an apprentice Rosarian at Cobham Hall we used to grow droopy Roses as Climbers;) or you could try this which works ;) , Rose drooping blooms due to weak necks on the flowering steins. Encourage stiffer stems by giving an extra feed of potash in February. Apply 50g of potash per square yard of soil.

The Climbing Iceberg, started life a a 'sport' of the ordinary Bush Rose - Iceberg.

In the case of Ena Harkness - a gorgeous red with a disappointing flower habit of 'drooping' instead of staying upright - the new vigorous shoot that was found and 'converted' into 'Climbing Ena Harkness', but also its droopy flower habit, fits in very well with its re-birth as a climber!:)

I am often asked about plants that suddenly have a flower which is different to the normal colour of the parent plants. There are several reasons why you can get a new flower colour. The most common cause is a plant mutation which then changes the growth habit or flower colour of the parent plant. Often a new shoot displays different characteristics to the parent. These new shoots are known as 'Sports'.

Okay everyone here we go! This is the first rose to bloom of the nine I planted last autumn and I haven't had roses for nigh on twenty one years. Two blooms looking a little rain damaged, they are also probably the least colourful of the nine. Beautiful heady perfume though! :)

'Lincolnshire Yellow Belly' Not the nicest of names.
