I will do it again, although the numbers will be down this time I'm sure.
I agree with JJ that the RSPB have lost their way in trying to be a 'nature' society instead of a dedicated bird society and the mag is now messy. I cannot fathom the logo nonsense, the society title is in upper case!

I'm a member and travel around the Cheshire area in the hope of getting some good bird shots. I think they do have to a attract a wide an audience, including kids etc, as possible while keeping the essential bird core of interest. I think though they are being influenced too much by the Bean Counters and Marketing People which could put them in danger of being too commercial and losing the plot.
I've visited quite a few sites and met the same comments from a lot of visitors who want to take some shots of the birds.........i.e: the Hides are too far away [up to 400 yards from the birds]. I met some volunteers who "work" on a site near to Birmingham and they were quite disgruntled as they were making the same comments about their site.

I think that's happened already. It seems every exhibition I or the other half has been to the RSPB are there. What the RSPB have to do with model engineering for example fails me. But they still had a stand there and people still give them money thinking that they desperately need it when they don't.

I went to local RSPB site last year and felt really disappointed by the visit. It's a site that has had more money poured into it than is necessary. They built a bird hide which has lifts for disabled people and wind up windows and was simply huge. Cost about half a million quid or something and we were the only people in it. By contrast the wildlife trust site I work on has a bird hide which is just a shed on stilts looking onto mudflats and cost 50k and simply has a ramp for disabled access. Does the same job but the RSPB seems to want to have everything with bells and whistles hanging off everything.

Just spent around an hour going round in circles on the RSPB website trying to download a pdf bird spotting form as in previous years so I could sit, watch, record and then enter the data on-line.
Can't find the form, keep getting demands to register etc, etc and seems like all logging had to be done direct to tablet, phone or laptop.
Could be the idiot factor at play here, but to me it seems that RSPB is getting too clever. There'll be no bird count here for the first time for 5 years :frown:

Dave.....perhaps they might see the error of their ways when they don't receive the expected amount of bird counts.

[IMG] just spotted this rare bird the "Lesser spotted Loli" lurking in the bushes very rare, only occasionally you get one with red coloring on the head very shy as you can see from the photo

It's a shame the website doesn't work properly, i think they were expecting millions to do this and the website, well as far as i managed to get to, stated the number is up 153,000 and then that was about as far as i have been able to go. I've left it loading, but i'm not hopeful.
