My previous Mini had Run Flats and coupled with being low profile the ride was very harsh, a bit like being in a go kart. So for my current one I opted for standard tyres, much nicer softer ride and more importantly they are about half the price too.

Seems that runflats are for the under 55's John . We need a little more cushioning.

Exscuse me, I am 65 in December, lost 2 1/2 stone recently, so no longer internally cushioned, and I am quite comfortable thank you.

Reviving this thread as thinking I may need to replace tyres next year, wondering how you got on @HarryS regarding insurance, did you notify them as compromised "balance" according to mini info, and was it hard to convince them.

@pamsdish , I did check it was safe to change from run flats to standard tyres on the original alloy rim . It is safe and legal. Never really considered the insurance ? The ride is a lot better and quieter now.
The topic on the Mini site ( a bit old ) seems to say yes no maybe ! I will contact my insurance after xmas and ask them. Not sure how easy this will be as it is internet only , and you cannot actually talk to anyone ( Quote Me Happy ).

I've only just spotted this thread.

As most people know, I'm not very well up on these sort of things but where else would the tyres be? :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

All is OK now Pam , we had the tyre refitted and later I applied puncture preventaive "Goop" to the Tyres . Thye don't lose any pressure now at all :blue thumb:
The standard tyres are a lot smoother than the run flats

A word of caution. Modern cars that are designed to use run flat tyres also have the braking system and suspension designed with these in mind. As such, a changeover to conventional tyres can affect vehicle safety, as both braking distance and handling can be adversely affected. Before any such change is made, it is a sensible thing to get written approval from the vehicle manufacturer. Something that I doubt would ever be given by BMW...

I was reading on the Mini forum, when ordering a new mini from the factory an option is run flats or standard tyres, I would have expected the same braking system and suspension to be fitted.
