How are you protect g them from slugs ? I have sown runner beans at the weekend and my garden is rife with them in the warmer months.

I use slug pellets. Definitely not very environmentally friendly, but its the one area where I don't have a good, minimal-labour, alternative.

Chickens are good too ... where we have our chickens we have zero slugs ...

I reckon that's too early I'm afraid. They will grow like blue-blazes and be too big to look after before you can plant them out. They will not withstand any frost, and will sulk quite a bit if you plant them out and the nights are cold - even if not frosty.

Once they have germinated get them outside for the day whenever the temperature is mild - that will slow them down and might give you a chance of preventing them getting too big ... but realistically you aren't going to be able to plant them out until 1st May, and take a chance, and I don;t plant mine out until middle of May earliest (unless you are in Cornwall of course !! Can you put your Location in your profile please? It will appear on the left of your posts then :) Just County or Town will do)

Zigs : Now look what you've done to this poor Newbie!!

Peas are a lot more tolerant of cold than runners, so probably ok. It will be mid april before they're ready to go out and by then I reckon you should be fine if you have a sheltered spot for them.

Peas now is fine, sowed a load this morning & will be sowing more in 2 weeks.

Didn't mean to mislead you on the bean sowings, this was purely an indoor thing unless they are still flowering when the frost has passed.

No slugs indoors but loads outside. Considering Nematodes to do the whole garden. They act like the Alien in Alien:hate-shocked:

They should be fine. Peas start out earlier than Runner Beans. The mice will be after them though, so you may want to watch out for telltale holes when the blighters nick them :(

Someone else mentioned that the location is not visible on people's profiles (alongside each message) on the Mobile version; I expect that's to save screen space.

I've not tried the mobile version so can't advise how to set your profile I'm afraid. Perhaps a kind-hearted Mod will add it for you ... otherwise it can wait until you get a chance to do it from a PC.

Saw an interview with the director of Alien once (can't remember who that is, and tbh don't really care anyway).

He said the inspiration for the alien in Alien came from nature. He said there was no point just making up an alien straight out of a designers imagination, because that way you either end up with something ridiculous or something that's already been done. I can't remember all the details but species that were mentioned were parasitic wasps, some bug that lays its eggs in other bugs, and a think with two mouths that lives in the hot toxic vents in the deep oceans.
