Salvias in containers, what are your experiences?

Got a 'gardener's back' so visit an osteopath regularly. She's brilliant and organised some MRI scans for me! So that's where the Blue Note plants went that i grew from seed collected last year! It's another example of a greggi salvia that's hardy AND produces seed!

 

Suddenly, as the weather's got cooler, all my salvias in containers (and some in the ground!) are throwing up seeds and wonderful 'cuttings' shoots!!

 

Pink Amistad seems a good plant but somehow not as outstanding as Amistad simply because of colour!!! Good plant though!

 

I've only got this one in a pot, bought it last year and this is a cutting, stays compact and bushy.
Black and bloom.

 

I have found that despite mild weather last winter, the few salvias I left in the ground outside failed to reappear. Except for a shrubby bright reddish one (Bordeaux I think). So sagitatta, confertiflora, rugata and Amistad all lost. And I had forgotten to take cuttings. It's annoying because plants are quite pricey despite the ease with which cuttings root.

 

Looks more like Amistad Pete? Black and Blue is usually, well, black and blue! Ours is very slow and no buds yet!

 

That was what the label said. Black and bloom,not blue.
The stems are black and the flowers are blue.

 

Cheers! Colours and cameras/photographs not perfect! I'm actually looking for a new camera rather than the tablet I'm presently mis-using! One with a really big zoom so that I don't have to go outside I think!!??

 

Black & Bloom is a new variety that popped up five or six years ago. Visually similar to Black & Blue but I've not found it to be as hardy. Possibly due to the fact that it doesn't appear to be tuberous like Black & Blue is.

 

No, I dont think mine has a tuber but cant say I've looked, last years plant survived, but only just and hasn't done much at all this year.

 

Agree totally! Curious with names so similar. Need to be in a container and started in warmth perhaps?

"purple and bloom".
I struggle with blues and purples.

Yeah it does get confusing.

 

I grow plants from seeds I collect. Thus Salvia Cambridge Blue slueeeds grow into what I call Cambridge Blue!! There's interesting!! However I've bought plants which look JUST like Cambridge Blue but are called Beyond Blue!! I suppose you could argue that its not IDENTICAL to Cambridge Blue, so could be a NEW VARIETY! Not really worried as Beyond Blue is an excellent plant to grow! Buy it!!!
Must be said ALL the plants I grow from seed are ALWAYS identical!!!
For example, my favourite dark blue Patens is ALWAYS the same, great, and dark blue, with tubers and hardy!!! BUT one day one of my seedlings will be RED!!! Wouldn't that be great!!!
