I think lack of ventialtion is the problem too. They only need protection from the worst of the weather. In below a table or beside a wall or something of that kind. They also don't want to be in rich compost if sowing in autumn as that makes them grow too quickly. The soft growth can then be hit by cold weather like frost and ice.

I made a simple error of not sewing my spring onion seeds 1/2 deep - instead I scattered them on top of the compost and covered them with vermiculite. Only 20 germinated :yikes:

Now after planted them 4 to each pots all with 2 inch long roots, they are sunning themselves on the table in the kitchen.
Because I am a novice in growing anything from seed, I've ordered some biodegradable fibre pots which will make it easy to plant them straight into the compost without damaging their roots."Note to myself -start saving toilet rolls/ egg boxes for the future)
Next week -it's the radishes turn with more spring onions.

Hubby is adding an extra removable shelf to the cold frame for my salad produce until we are into the warmer weather then they are going out into a cloche covered in fleece.

Tip for those is to keep them watered but not wet, otherwise they disintegrate if moved and back to square 1, then plant them below the surface of soil and drench, so they rot asap. A rim of card left above will wick up moisture and leave your plant dry.

Thank you @infradig, If needed I will wet the outside pots first before transplanting, may even give them a quick dip in water before they start going soft, covering the whole pots with compost.
LOL , Everyone must think I'm making a big deal of this - but to me growing something from seed instead of buying from shop is so exiting -"hubby who just smiles, hasn't any interest at all in gardening- but is very useful in all the heavy work" :yay:

Sowed some cosmos, sweet kisses and apricotta.
Short growing pot marigolds and some old polyanthus seeds but not sure if they will come up.

Sowed the aubergine seed this morning, still holding off on anything that will be planted outside.

@Grandma Sue I just notice your post and yes, I agree, starting plants from seeds is really rewarding. I add a few perennials each year but the bulk of my sowing is annuals.

I've got an order of new small pots coming and I hope they arrive by Friday. I'll post a pic of them because they are colourful.

I have done some cosmos today, apricot lemonade.
Never sown them before so hoping they do well!

Peas that I did at the weekend are sprouting already so pleased with those.

Hi all. I am growing loads of things from seed this year for the first time. Almost everything I’ve sown has been done in module trays.

The most advanced seedlings I have are cosmos, almost all of which have germinated bar some extra I sowed yesterday.

My question is, at what point do I put them into their own little pots?

When they're big enough to handle properly @Ciaran Mc . They need to have proper leaves, not just seed leaves, to avoid damage. I'd leave them a bit, as you can also pinch them out to make them bushier, which will also make sturdier plants in the long run. Cosmos can often be very leggy if you don't.
Sowing early can be difficult due to lack of light, causing plants to get etiolated [leggy] and weaker, so it's a good method [nipping out tips] for Cosmos.

Yeah all those Fizzy Rose Picottee seem leggy to me but that’s what I resowed yesterday along with some purity. Thanks as always @fairygirl, looking after me on a different website these days but not much different otherwise!

I’m thinking about sowing seeds, but no space in the house and the unheated greenhouse is bloomin cold and still full of overwintering things. Hmm, maybe we should get organised this week…
