At the moment I'm painting my hall... it has turned out to be a long old job. So far - 3 coats of paint to try and cover the previous colour! Hoping to have it finished this week... then start on another room! Hope you are well x

Did you use a primer first. Too late for the present walls, maybe the future ones.

All well here, just normal stuff.

Lol... I did something really stupid:

There were 2 full tins of a cheap white paint in the garage, so thought I'd use them as an undercoat. Well, I put the first coat on... woke up the next day and started to think I'd been dreaming because the walls didn't look as though they'd been painted at all... the white paint had dried to a transparant film. Anyway, I was snowed in, so unable to get new supplies... I cracked on applying a second coat. I'm not kidding... you could still see the original colour through the second coat of paint. By now I was fed up.

The snow cleared enough to enable access to my small lane and my son turned up with some proper undercoat... that has now been applied. Now I have pure white walls ready for the next 2 coats of cream paint.

I have bought undercoat once and it was quite transparent when dry.

That's the weird thing... it seems to cover when wet, but transparant when dry!

Ok, that is a shame, if you do go out and buy some primer for any other walls just a trick, the primer can be colored to match your finished paint. BUT you must tell the person to use HALF the drops in the primer than you would in the paint. Some do not know this at the counter. Something about the primer takes the color better. But anyway, trust me with this info. It works and makes painting easier and looks better in the long run.

Why not rent it out? Split it into parts and the family shares out the rental proceeds. That way, either you could live in part of the house or at least one day if one of you gets the money, you could move back in.
