I've no doubt they will find all sorts - I'd even bet that if we were allowed access to things, we would find even more. We are focussing on the last 14 years with the Tories, but let's not forget what went before them... it was riddled as well.

Make no mistake, I would gleefully stand at the door of Parliament dishing out P45's to all of them - as they are ALL part of the problem. The vast majority are career MP's that would never last in the business world.

          103. Let the errant bankers off the hook, further embedding the "profits are private, losses are for the public purse to bear" position that had been taking hold since the 1970s.

That said, I agree the list is impressive and that so many of the achievements were smashed to smithereens by the political choice of austerity is a tragedy of the modern era and the harms done will take at least a generation to recover from.

And there, exactly, is why we are skint!

It is very easy to spend other people's money - especially when there is no comeback on you when you get it wrong.

Well fandabbydoozy. So we can look forward to Labour leadership to be the shining beacon of success and prosperity then. Honestly, these lists aren't worth spit; times, economics, trust and people in and out of government have changed.
I don't give a monkeys which party is in charge as long as they have a coherent plan for stability and ability to deliver it

Unlike most of you [ I imagine ] I have worked in Iraq, and SH was an evil man who killed countless thousands of his own people and whose chemical weapons whilst not killing me, have certainly made the last few years very unpleasant.
Did he deserve to die, imo, yes?
Would he subsequently have used chemical weapons against the West, undoubtedly.

Of course past achievements have value, none of us can see into the future, although some of you seem to think you can.

"While Gordon Brown could have sold at a better price, for the vast majority of governments across established economies, there is no real point to holding gold.

The purpose of foreign exchange reserves is not for the state to manage wealth on behalf of the country. People should do this for themselves.

UK reserves should only really be used to underpin monetary policy, and to halt any possible crisis such as a significant run on the pound, not as any kind of sovereign wealth fund. The trouble is that gold is not well suited as a state asset, as its value is very likely to drop as soon as it is deployed as a government intervention mechanism." [ Quote from IFS, who are politically neutral ]

The market is of course very different to that of two decades years ago, and any government selling today will not have anywhere near the same impact. But this doesn’t change the cold hard truth that gold is a market best fit for sophisticated speculators, not the state.[ Quote from IFS, who are politically neutral ]

It's not that we think we can see into the future @Punkdoc, it is more that we have been disappointed/let-down over subsequent governments (of both/all colours) - equally, many folks are utterly fed up of the Punch and Judy show that our parliament has become.

PS - the key to your defence of Gordon Brown (a man that I actually have a deal of respect for, believe it or not) is in your first sentence.. he could have sold at a better price. If I were to sell your car for half of it's worth, would you be happy? Of course not.

ALL governments have failed on many things such as housing, NHS, energy generation and distribution, transport, roads and all the while punishing us for going about our daily lives. Folks have had enough.

But as you will be aware the gold price changes on a daily basis, and GB although a good Chancellor, was not, sadly blessed with being able to see into the future.
