Money earned here to spend here doesn't go far enough. Say you've worked hard at school, gone to Uni, then had to do a Master's because so many others do, ended up with 60-100k worth of debt ... and after all that, your job does not pay enough for you to cover rent and utilities, that's assuming you are lucky enough to find somewhere to rent. You are now in your mid-20s ... and have made zero career progress. You can only get short term contracts so things are up in the air all the time, nothing settled, nothing secure. Plus every time your phone pings, it appears everyone else is living some sort of ideal life. It's a recipe for mental health problems.

Yep, sums it up, something has gone wrong.
Education education education, even if you should have really got a job, not everyone is university material.
But half go just for the experience as far as I can make out.

They need to see that they will,at least, get a decent home whether they but it or rent it. The off chance that they might just achieve it in their mid to late thirties isn't any kind of motivation

Society is broken and you can't fix it against a back drop of 'diversity' multiculturalism and conflicting religious beliefs. The latter stages of capitalism are well documented, fat, lazy, unproductive and self destructive.

No government can fix the problems we have.

He was Chair of the National Council for Civil Liberties for several years. I suppose that would make him a PITA for some people, yes.

But for our own sanity and self respect we have to try don’t we? At least I do …

                    Yep, I couldn't agree more.

If you're a landowner here - especially a large one - you have more power than practically everywhere. This is partly because the biggest landowners have always been politically active. You even have more power than the police in the sense that if someone comes onto your land uninvited it as seen as an issue between you and them rather than one where the police (state) is expected to intervene.

This also means landlords pretty much have the power to charge as much rent as they like. There is little to no incentive to lower them. Just having the land, it doesn't really matter if you get no income from it because its an asset. You see this in the number of empty shops, where rents are too high, but how often do landowners reduce the rent? They must stand to gain more from keeping them empty.

And as more and more people become landowners, the cost of the remaining land becomes astronomical, as there is too much demand and too little supply. Everything becomes super expensive because big landowners have a monopoly. People can't refuse, they have to live somewhere. They then buy up more land from councils that are having financial problems and badly need the money, but at the cost to communities that are stripped of their amenities.

So yeah, if youre in the 1% you're doing brilliantly, if you're the rest, you're being screwed over.

Lovely to see well reasoned discussions this evening!!
Maybe instead of disparaging the rise in mental health problems, you could look at the reasons why?

No, I don't know the answer, but I do believe there is a problem.

Don't believe everything the bots and the racists tell you about Sadiq Khan. He's a good mayor, on the whole, and has just won a third term quite decisively - which is not a common thing to have achieved.
