I caught some of the party leader debate. Starmer will still win as there's such resentment to the blues but jeez the guy hasn't got a clue what to do and is as convincing as a hairy egg.

If hormones are a problem with voting then perhaps it should be totally restricted to the pre-pubescent and post menopausal women :roflol:

The thing is, democracy is never going to guarantee the best government possible, but giving every ‘adult’ a voice is the only way to avoid violent revolution … and sometimes, if things go badly, it doesn’t even avoid that …

It really does depend on who you are and your life experiences doesn’t it … I watched it all and formed the completely opposite view.

How many countries are there were the legal age to vote is 16? I very much doubt it will be more than a dozen countries. I am not sure there is any countries in the EU where 16 year olds can vote in their own national elections, it might be different when voting in the European parliament elections though.

I wouldn't be against 16 yr olds given the vote. Someone who is 17 now has to wait till they are 22 for their say in the next GE (assuming a full term) and the gov's policies will affect them in that intervening period.

Maybe 17 is a good compromise. If you can drive, why not vote? Being in charge of a potentially deadly vehicle requires more maturity than casting a vote, I'd say.

Thing is, if that were the case, someone who is 16¾ today would have to wait until they are 21¾ until they get a chance to vote - that is what happens when there is any age deadline. Given the way things like car insurance etc is, maybe we should be raising the age for driving to 18...

Not a moan but a surprise.

I have received an email from the candidate that hopes to, and may, get elected asking if she can come and have a cuppa and a chat in a couple of weeks. This is the one who is the only candidate that has taken an interest in what is happening and is needed in the villages. A positive move as she hasn't been elected yet.

Yet there has been proposals for changes and restrictions after passing your test, not new as some of these proposals have been scrapped in the past. I am sure in May a new bill had been brought to parliament, probably through the, private members bill for a new GDL, a graduate driving license, This would apply to the 17 - 24 age group after passing their test, where there would a 6- 12 month probation period. Some of the things they are proposing are restrictions on, passengers, engine size etc etc.

Could do that, yep. I think with the crowded state of the roads these days, 17 is somewhat young to be let loose behind the wheel.

                        I think you've pulled, @shiney! :loll:

When it comes to the school leaving age, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland all have different policies when a 16 year old can actually leave education. For a 16 year old school leaver in England it is different as there is a must until your 18. A Northern Ireland student who turns 16 before the 30th June can leave school that year and could vote, yet another turns 16 on the 2nd July could vote but yet can't leave school until June the following year.

Going back t to the London Mayor discussion, surely with 32 separate boroughs, someone is needed to coordinate things. I would prefer that person to be an elected representative.
