Patrick Vallance has been given a peerage so he can serve in the Cabinet. I really despise this tactic. Cabinet members should be democratically elected. Sunak should not have helicoptered in Cameron, though at least he had been elected at one point.

It is the venture capitalist way - borrow an absolute shed load of money, pour it into some infrastructure, updated office buildings, equipment etc (more than is needed), then close/sell off the 'excess' as part of "restructuring to save money" thus generate profit, pay dividends.... the debt remains. Take a look at the likes of Morrisons or Asda to see a similar model.

Whilst I can agree that government run services were generally as bad, my experience of water/drainage etc back then was the converse - burst water mains were not a frequent thing, sewers and gullies were maintained regularly and flooding was only caused by biblical rain and the river bursting its banks. Water/sanitation should NEVER have profit involved.

That may be correct, but when 2 out of 5 don't vote at all, THEY are the ones who are heavily responsible for Labour being elected - or Tories last time.
If we had three or four parties of relatively equal size, then maybe, just maybe, there would be more willingness of politicians to work together for the good of the country, rather than the good of themselves.

I would like to see the different parties working together more often - consulting one another. Not just when there is a hung parliament, but ALWAYS, no matter WHO has the majority. More might actually be achieved for the benefit of the people.

I think we have to ask ourselves why they didn't vote though, in all fairness.

This was the first election my daughter has voted in and whilst she hasn't said who she voted for, she has said that she felt she could not vote with her heart as her vote would be wasted if she did, because we live in a 'true blue' seat where the Tories would win even if they presented a dog turd with a blue rosette on it. Some of her friends didn't vote at all for similar reasons, or because they felt that there was literally none of the candidates or parties that aligned with what they were feeling and wanting.

A system where money is taken in taxation, yet people either feel they cannot have a say, and/or worse still the system forces them to do things they do not agree with and there is no opportunity to change that, not least as the system is absolutely geared to be red or blue and exclude all others, is not a democracy - - that, is a dictatorship.

My favourite quote, from Tim Farron, after Truss lost her seat: "We have recalled Liz Truss from the field. Her work is done."

For only the second time in my life (and I'm quite old!) I voted for the winning candidate in my constituency. :yay:

Why is one-party government, where that party is elected by a small proportion of the population, better than PR, @simone_in_wiltshire ? The evidence (I've quoted some below) shows this not to be true - and not merely because PR is much more democratic.

Strong and Stable: the most politically stable democracies use PR - Make Votes Matter

The party system is outdated, IMV. All MPs draw a salary from tax-payers and yet half are hell-bent on stopping the other half getting anything done. It's just a pointless merry-go-round.

                :blue thumb: Nice one!

I must say I am thrilled that for the very first time ever the MP for my area is not a Tory. Not because of the Tories per se, but because a totally safe seat is undemocratic. Turn-out down here is generally around 66%. I imagine many of the remaining 34% have historically felt "What's the point?" ... and they do have a point.

Well, the first cabinet meeting will be today, so I wonder what will be their first steps.

Whilst they are inheriting a very difficult "in tray" there must surely be some things they can put into motion that even if slow to build will be quick wins? One of the first I would do is to take social care away from local authorities and back into the NHS, at least for post hospital care. In my personal experience, that was one of the biggest issues - folks who were well enough to leave hospital (although still unwell or recovering) and unable to do so because there was no care package in place.

I like that idea. Give them the opportunity to contribute more as well. Then publish an annual "Philanthropists List" and have them competing to get the top of it.

Well, I live in a similar place and truly believed that my vote would be wasted, but it turned out not to be the case.

Surely it's more democratic to allow the rest of us to decide what a small percentage of our taxation is used for. The billionaires and multi-millionaires could first put their own house in order to ensure that the workers down the supply chains are not exploited and are paid a decent wage - whatever country they are in.
Then they could impress us all by donating an equal proportion to charities.
They'd still have more left than they could spend in a lifetime.
Like that's ever going to happen :loll:

I wonder who will be the next Tory leader? The amount of PM's they have had in the last few years, you would think they were on, zero hour contracts.
