And, meanwhile, in France all sorts going on. A targeted campaign to avoid splitting the vote by removing candidates from the ballot seems to have paid off for the far left, with the far right moving from 1st position last week to 3rd in this final vote.

I'm not in favour of an arbitrary cap on upper earnings because that could unfairly hit entrepreneurs that have individually built their income by their own hands. Whereas people that have been brought in to run big companies haven't. :noidea:

A cap is good but there needs to be some way of working out a fairer system. If we put a cap on it now I can think of a few ways that it can be circumvented under current tax laws. So there needs to be a lot of thought on how to do it and how to make it fair.

I think if you start capping wages those people will just go abroad.

If wage caps were brought in why would any entrepreneur take risks to start a business here. Don't forget many start ups involve people putting their house and life savings into a company and could easily lose it all. With no new businesses being formed the country would stagnate and decline.

I agree caps are very problematic. If there was no wiggle room whatsoever in the tax system, that would ensure society got its fair share from the highly paid.

I agree that a cap on income across the board would prove problematic ( pretty much like most of the issues facing the UK and other countries ) and the legal/ tax system would have to be adapted to get anywhere near solving the problem.
Perhaps look at it from a gardening POV ? Once the "fruit" gets to a certain size/stage of ripeness, you remove it from the main plant and eat it ( or give it away ) so useful to someone or you pop it in the compost heap if it has gone off. Sill of use tho as tt rots down and helps your plants for the following year. A certain amount of pruning/pinching out is also often necessary during the growing season. This method would not go amiss in both Houses.
Just hope this govt. gets the Gardening Bug - we are, after all. known as a Nation of Garden Lovers

@JWK You have a point but also don't forget a certain amount of business acumen is vital when starting a business. Just as an example ....... How many people decided to invest in the hospitality sector in the midst of the Covid pandemic and then lost everything - quite a few I believe.
However, it's not the Little Fish I'm referring to but more the Blue Whales :)

But don't the Little Fish hope to become Blue Whales?

It reminds me of the time about 60 years ago when there was an election. The Labour candidate knocked on our door. He didn't actually ask who I intended voting for but after a few pleasantries he asked me what job I did, I told him that I was a barber and he said "Oh well, as you're one of the workers I guess you will be voting Labour". My response was "Using that argument I should vote Conservative as I want to be a millionaire"! He didn't have an answer to that. :noidea:

The trouble is, we probably need these investors more than they need us.

Darren Jones said on the news this morning, to grow the economy, it's going to need investment from the private sector.
For each new home that is built, £22,000 is paid in dividends to share holders, yet since the government scrapped the rebate on diesel to the construction industry in April 2022, where has the extra revenue gone. In 2023, the UK went through 30 billion litres of diesel, with the construction industry accounting for about 14% an extra 46p a litre would relate to nearly an extra 2 billion, yet less new home builds were completed in 2023 than during covid, coincidence?

Do any of those complaining about tax avoidance have any form of ISA? They are a method of tax avoidance available to anybody and everybody with any spare cash to invest. Similarly, making additional contributions to pensions to reduce taxable earnings.
Does anybody want those 'loopholes' closed?

So Labours plan for building is to create a new category of Grey Belt. Presumably this will be ill defined and allow building anywhere it likes as it crosses the boundaries of brown and green belt

Yes ... I do want to close those loopholes. Tax should apply uniformly to all income, however gained, not just wages from employment. Indeed, there is an argument, IMV, for taxing wages at a lower rate than income from savings, shares, dividends, etc. As a society, work should reap a greater reward than assets already owned.

It is problematic. We have had 15 yrs of extensive building progs here, but no new doctors surgeries, etc. Looking at the voting numbers, the population increase has been at least 3-fold in 20 yrs. But ... some of the new houses finished and ready for occupancy last October remain unsold. So just building is not enough.

Plus I was speaking to someone on the board of the Federation of Master Builders yesterday and another problem is a massive skills shortage in the trade.
