John, I think that Crittalls are only just down the road from your in-laws (Witham)! Maybe a visit to them next time you're over will help. :blue thumb:

Good idea but I think their greenhouse manufacture has long since gone. Mrs JWK was the MD's PA at the Witham factory and she helped me get a good deal on my bigger greenhouse in 1976, an ex-display model from the front of the factory :)

We will ask next time we visit in case anyone knows if they still support them. Trouble with mentioning Crittalls in Braintree/Witham is that the conversation will last all day, they seemed to employ practically everyone in that area for decades and everyone has a few stories to tell. Most of my wife's relatives worked for them but mostly on the Steel Window making side.

Wish I could go back in time to get the relevant bits when we still had working contacts.

Do you happen to know if the greenhouse factory is still there shiney ?

    Sorry, I don't know. :noidea:

We used to have their windows in our place. They were pretty good and lasted until we decided to go plastic (much easier to look after). People said that they would warp but they were in our place for 53 years without warping. :blue thumb:

Dreadful thermal efficiency though, or have I got that wrong? If so they probably contribute to draughts (caused the metal thermal-bridge to outside being cold and causing the adjacent air, indoors, to cool and then fall - creating the draught)

We never had that problem because we put in secondary glazing with a 2.5" gap. It had better thermal value and sound proofing than the current double glazing.

I just had a good look at my greenhouses this morning and realised one of the side vents will fit into the roof. So on the job list list weekend is to move it to the roof ridge then set up another side vent (I have a couple of these as spares). Then drape the bamboo blinds over.

It needs doing, I had a max of 35 deg C (that's 95F in old money) yesterday.

Excellent. I'll be interested to know how you then feel that that helps temperature control.
