Shortest Day Today !

It's complex, to do with the Earth's orbit, which is eliptical, so the Earth goes a bit faster in this part of it.

The day length is getting longer overall but Noon shifts a bit, so its not actually at Noon for a while, so we're wobbling a bit.

 

Can't work out if this is 'and now the smartypants science bit'? or is the 'wobbling a bit' indicating you just talking ballcocks again Zig?

 

The wobble bit was trying to keep it simple

The Earth rotates on its axis on average in 23 hrs 56 mins, but due to it travelling along its eliptical orbit, bits of which are faster and slower, the solar day at midwinter is shorter than the day in midsummer, which is longer than 24 hours.

So, in summary, yes it wobbles

 

Sounds like a bloomin' design fault to me , can we return it to the manufacturer !

I've definitely noticed" the Wobble", but I was putting that down to the Bacardi.

 

Sorry, Zigs, but you won't get the French to budge on being at a table on the dot of 12 noon! There's a tragic, manic look of panic in their eyes if they're not in the vicinity of food by 12h05. The planet can wobble all it likes, but it's a given here, like death and taxes

 

Well over a month since the winter solstice , and we have around 1 hour 20 minutes extra light Now I can notice the extra light in the evenings as I get home ,its light to about 5pm , but it really does not seem to be getting much lighter in the mornings.
The sun max elevation is has now risen to 19° from 13° at the solstice , on its way to 60° in June . The solar calculator below shows the sunrise to sunset arc , nearly 270° in June I only really noticed this huge sun arc last year when camping at Silverdale. The sun rose at 4 in the morning behind the tent circled us all day and set to the right of us over the bay late in the evening.
