I would reconsider planting that sedge if I was you @Escarpment. It's hellish stuff and will seed everywhere if you turn your back on it...

 

I agree. It's a thug and not pretty. Water hawthorn might be a better choice or a dwarf water lily or pontederia cordata.

 

There are various grasses or other sedges which will do a good job too - ie for the edge of apond to hang over the water itself, or even manage the shallows.

 

Thanks, I'll keep a close eye on it and remove flowerheads.

 

An Orange tree, I’ve always wanted one, Seville Orange Tree 'Bigaradier' Grafted Mini-Stem, from Roots Plants. Evergreen & UK hardy it is expected to grow to 1.5m maximum. It has been potted & seems happy sheltered nearer the house for now although I will move it out onto the patio (south facing) as the weather warms up. I’ve grown quite fond of it already so fingers crossed I can keep it alive through the winter.

 

@Panda2 that looks a lovely tree! But I didn't think Seville orange would be hardy here in UK. So I would suggest ensuring you've got somewhere inside for it over winter. You might have to wait a while to get enough Seville oranges for marmalade - the scent of the flowers is fantastic anyway. But I have just made a small batch of marmalade from the fruits of my variegated lychee - and it tastes all the better knowing I grew it!

 

I dont think Seville orange is winter hardy in the UK either, possibly in frost free coastal locations or microclimates.
I left one out and now have a really nice rootstock, often that part is hardy, but not always.

 

Four salvias, including Amistad and Love and Wishes - £3.75 each so quite a good price. The ones from last year haven’t survived.

 

I have got a potting shed I can put it in for the next few years before it goes in the final planter when it will be too big for me to move but it was definitely noted as fully hardy & not requiring any frost protection, we will see.. And yes the scent is lovely even from the few flowers on arrival.

Went to the local gardening club plant fair and grabbed a fair few plants for £25, think I did quite well!

 

Wow, those are a fantastic price, I paid double that for my salvias

 

Bargain. And hostas are beautiful.

 

yeah, I do like a hosta!!
