While out with no gardening in mind I came across tree paeonies for €13.95!!
Snapped up these two and on googling find they are indeed classic ones and both are scented How lucky is that?



I shall be back in the same town on Thursday so may need to go and have a look at the others they've got

lots of good growth as well from low down both look great have you grown before ? , some of mine are in bud

I grew P delavayi in Kent and had a beautifully scented clone, which used to drip with nectar. Raised a few from it from seed which I gave away. I currently have three seedlings just making their first leaves in the cold frame, from a friend's seed. I've never grown P suffruticosa or its varieties before, but have longed to have some for ages. Which ones have you got Spruce?

 

this one Rockii I dont know if it will flower this year it is fickle , mine all need a good pruning something I hate to do with them as they are getting leggy and very woody as 3 of them are over 20 years old.
You can get the Rockii for about £14.00 as they are all seed raised so you can have lots of variation , I know from certain famous gardens in the UK which have the original Joseph Rock they sell for well over £100 but from what I am told a very long waiting list

I have about 5 different ones in total. So much easier to get hold of now than 10/15 years ago.
all P suffruticosa the secret is to plant them deeper than the pot as they are grafted onto perennial peony root and will help them survive for a couple of years, but by planting deeper it encourages roots to form quicker. You have to be careful just as with Roses that have been grafted as the perennial peony can also throw up shoots which need to be pulled off otherwise they will take over from, you can easily tell my the foliage but be careful when doing this as the tree peony will also send new shoots up from the ground which you want.

No frost pocket as I'm on a hill
I've been trying to find a graft, but many of the shoots. Are coming from below soil. I'm hoping they're on their own roots, but will discover when I turn them out of their pots.

So I succumbed to three more. So while waiting for the fog to clear and more warmth outside I shall be researching their growth habits. Some are more upright and some more spreading. I'd like to get them in the right places
Then I shall be busy planting (and finding out whether they are indeed on their own roots) As you can see, these are also good plants with lots of basal growth

 

another batch very nice , I think they will be grafted , but its a chunk of root only 2 or three inches long so not easy to see if not directly on the side of the pot , I checked mine it does have flower buds on the new shoots that grew last year.

Thanks Spruce. Yes I'll have a good investigation when I take them out of their pots, and if unsure I'll post photos. I'd like to get this right! Just discovered I'm out of bonemeal and hoof n horn, so need a run to the shops before I start digging holes grrr

I just got back from the garden center they had a about 20 tree peonies for sale all grafted but with some producing quite a lot of own roots , I was tempted but NO I had to be strong

 

Ha ha ha you're stronger than I am, but then you have some beauties already!
I went to my local Point Vert (gardeny/farmy shop) for hoof and blood. Came out with that plus Paeony lactiflora Bowl of Beauty I'm a lost cause
Wanted one of those since seeing it in an aunt's garden as a child lol
