Had to go down the local nursery for a bag or two of compost and just had to give myself an Easter treat (already ate my egg!), so came home with an Acer Sango Kaku which I've put in a nice big terracota pot that was hankering to be filled, and half a dozen Osteospermum 'Cherry' a colour I'd not seen before and is a lovely blood red.

FC, would you mind if I bring you down to earth a little and if I'm out of order please say so! :) You are already troubled by the fact you don't think you'll have enough growing space. You also say that you're growing for half the world (okay a little exaggeration) but the question is are you enjoying it, because that's what gardening is supposed to be about. Yes, you are growing for these grateful people, and they are grateful because you are doing all the work and the price is coming out of your pocket. It wasn't so long ago that you were a novice and you've turned into a fine gardener since, why not introduce these relatives/friends to the art of growing their own plants and possibly GC as well! If you lighten your own load it will stop what is currently a hobby that you enjoy turning into a yearly slog for others!

Many years ago I chose to turn a hobby into a job, I came to hate it so much that I abandoned both and haven't touched that hobby since.

Tis a fair point @Sheal, but the answer is that I am enjoying it - in fact, me and Radio 2 (or Classic Rock) in the greenhouse is a nice escape following work. As you know, I generally work 7 days, so when I get time it is nice to do something different. And no matter how many times I see it, taking a totty wee seed, sticking it in some compost, and then a couple of weeks later having a plant..... well, its one of those remarkable things about good ol' Mother nature.

The people I am 'catering' for are a (reasonably) select few - namely brother in law and his family and mother in law and her OH - both of whom dig us out on numerous occasions in terms of child care each year (picking up my daughter when I have to work late etc) - all for free, and if they didn't.... well, suffice to say it would cost a hell of a lot more than the seeds and compost. The others are our neighbours on either side, simply because they are fantastic neighbours in every sense (taking parcels, looking out for miscreants etc etc), and a couple of neighbours across the road - an elderly gent (got to be in his 80's now, loves his garden, but just can't do it any more) - God love him, I get a wave every morning as he wanders off for his paper, and he is such a lovely guy...... and in all sincerity, I am going to get old one day - - it would be nice to have a neighbour look out for me and give me a few plants; and a family who we get on remarkably well with (borrowing tools etc etc - - they even gave us education stuff four our daughter that would have cost the thick end of £5k to buy!) - they have no room for a greenhouse, but are slowly taking tips and trying stuff; again, the best neighbours one could ask for really.

The only others are friends at work, and one couple who are just at the start of their first home, and have their own young kids to worry about as well as being professional childcare for others; they are learning, bit by bit, but it is slow as they never seem to stop.

My main space concern wasn't so much the current lot - at the moment, I would estimate that I am running about 25% of overall greenhouse capacity; however, if I had tried to carry on using 12-cell trays, I would be swamped in no time. It was more a case of having some tools to fit the plans. Besides, they will be re-usable for a good few years. I am still using supposedly throwaway trays and lids from a few years ago. Its amazing what a bit of Fairy liquid and some warm water can do

In total, I have still spent less than £100 on seeds etc this year - I am just maximising what I get for it.

Okay your points are noted and taken on board. :)

Regarding space, when some of the seedlings have matured enough into plants you could get some of those out onto your patio early next month to give you more space in the greenhouse for the younger ones. There shouldn't be any frost around by then but it's always handy to keep a plastic sheet handy in case. I'm like you, I never throw trays away, they are used until they fall apart! I also keep a check at my local amenity site (tip) this time of year, it's amazing the amount of trays and pots that turn up there over the next month or so.

I went into the shed yesterday, and had a "Oooh, I forgot I had all those" moment......

Particularly from the 180-cell trays, but also other trays, the plan is to plant up baskets and stuff from the small plugs - - getting some of the plants from the 12-cell trays into them last year was a royal pain in the rear, and I am not convinced that I didn't stunt them somewhat by massaging their rootballs to fit into holes in flower pouches and planters.

              I am quite lucky in that I have quite a sheltered area up against the house that I can stack stuff and if needs be whack a tarp over them for a night (removing it in the morning of course, as its a proper tarp that lets no light through); having said that, I reckon our chances of a frost now, where I am, is slim at best;

I kinda felt that I had to get cracking though, as I had held off and held off waiting for the weather to break.......

You've got more patience than me FC, baskets and pots are a pet hate of mine. I worked for a local nursery for a while and when it came to basket time I conveniently found myself a job somewhere else on the site that needed doing. I'd rather pot up a hundred trees than a dozen baskets! :heehee:

We've always said on GC, it doesn't matter how big your greenhouse is, it's never big enough! :)

Went to the Gardeners Club in Crews Hill on the weekend.

Couldn't say No to these for £1.25 each

Will prob need a bit of extra attention in the first year, but still great value

I live facing quite a trendy charity shop (sells sofas, has a coffee shop, etc) and went in before, bought two hardback gardening books for £2 to go on the bookshelf.

The Complete Gardener by John Brookes & The Encyclopaedia of Gardening 1993 edition - both in perfect condition.

I saw a small pocket handbook, with illustrations of weeds, flowers, etc.. probably from 30 years ago, still had a lot of scribbles from the previous owner in pencil. Might see if it's there next time and buy it for 50p!

Mrs Trunky received a garden gift voucher from a friend for her birthday recently, we've used it to buy this lovely pot. Just got to decide what to put in it now. :)
