Went to Wyevale, didn't appear to be anything on sale, seeds all full price; the Scone & pot of tea was good though.

Most do, BigC, some will start off white, go slightly pink, and then back to white again. I like "clean" colours in the garden and, I confess, I don't have any pink roses among the 20 or so roses that are scattered around mainly because every garden seems to have a pink rose in it!!

I have friends who live in a lovely big old House ,which only has a relatively small garden, in the center of Manchester who have a big startling deep blue Hydrangea which catches the eye immediately and I covet:dunno::heehee: I think the Hydrangea was planted by the previous owner several decades ago but it is really is the best blue I have ever seen.

That is so true, BigC. During the prolonged heat wave my Hydrangeas wilted very quickly, partly because I garden on a depth of around 350' of pure sand so water drains quickly through, so I was using the hose pipe daily on the borders and particularly on the Hydrangeas.

I've found that, in my experience, that with Hydrangeas in pots/containers there seems to be a fine balance between not enough and too much watering.:wallbanging: Two white Hydrangeas that I bought this year in 3 liter pots were in perfect condition when they arrived were almost lost when I placed one in a bucket containing about 2" of water and one I left in the pot but watered it gently where they were in a sheltered placde.. Within a week both were looking unhappy and I had quickly plant them in the ground, and now they're romping away looking happy. So I don't know if there is a need to be careful with Hydrangeas in containers but I think you will need to keep an eye on them:scratch::dunno::snorky:

As the others have said, white hydrangeas are a law unto themselves. Some start off one colour (usually a pale pastel) and gradually go white and then change again.

This is one of our Annabelles. It starts off pale green, goes to a pure white and then returns to a pale green as it starts to go over. This is the early flowering stage so the green are the younger flowers

A lot of the white ones can grow rather large but are controllable with pruning. These aren't ours but are in the National Collection. You can see that some varieties grow pointed flowers whereas others grow round

This is Limelight that Verdun mentioned

Some varieties have pink and white on the same flower head at the same time
          P1280515.JPG

Others have pink and white flowers, separately, on the same plant (took this photo last week in someone's garden - I hope the cuttings take :fingers crossed:)

Lovely Shiney.....would like to grow them to that size. :)

I have come to value hydrangeas over the last 5 years or so......very under rated maybe because they have been planted most everywhere; familiarity breeding contempt! :noidea:

                  20180923_154319.jpg

6 used stone stepping stones for £10.

                  20180923_160049.jpg

As I got them to replace the existing stepping slabs that had sunk, I might get away with just standing the new ones on top of the old ones. It would make cutting the grass difficult though.

                  20180923_154347.jpg

I called into Wyevale on the way home and picked up this canna for £5. They had lots more and different varieties. I might have had more had my money situation not been an issue.

I intend to buy a big pot to put it in and stand it on my summer house step. QD sell 14" glazed clay pots for £14.99. It just happens to be close to where I work which is a bonus.

Now I've got it, how do I look after it? Can I divide it? How winter hardy is it?

                  20180923_161446.jpg
I have put it here for now. All being well It will replace the vaccinium vitas in the corner.

This was given as a gift. What is it and what do I do with it?

Today I bought one of the pots I have been considering buying for a few weeks. While I was there I bought some plants to put in it. That sort of defeats the object though as I am trying to replace my existing plastic pots.

I put some tulip bulbs in the bottom of the pot along with the cordyline and cyclamen I bought today. I have no idea whether these plants are happy together, or whether the pot is big enough, but I'm sure it will be ok for this winter.

I'm not sure whether to leave it where it is or stand it on the summer house step.

                        G.
