i'd love to have a border just full of dahlias!!

 

Upturned flower-pot, filled with dry grass / hay etc, on a stick. But you have to empty it regularly, so depends on your squeamishness level!

 

I've just got myself one of these; Lillium formosanum, a clump forming lily that produces huge highly scented 6" blooms on short sturdy stems.


I've also picked up some Asarum; a glossy leaved evergreen ground cover plant for shade...

 

Me too buddy but am not sure how they`d handle the winters. At least in pots they can be moved around to give some protection. I don`t fancy having to lift them every year. I`ll see how these ones do this winter and maybe plant a load in the border next season. The border goes get a little protection from the eaves so I`ll see.

well, my new Etesia mower went in for a full service today at an Etesia agent in Little Paxton (near cambridge) .... new blade, carb cleaned and gasket, plug, filter, lubricate moving parts etc .... it's worth servicing, as it will be used a lot

1st time that I have been to that store .... it's huge, and they sell farming equipment (including huge Unimog 4X4's) and have loads of fertilizers etc specifically marketed for farmers ...

I was in a rush, so never had a close look, but will have a browse when I collect the mower next week ... I want to have a close look at their bags of fertilizers

 

I bought from the local farmer - a 500kg bag of Nitrogen and another of 16-16-16 ... lasts a few years and is much cheaper than by the 25kg bag.

Allotment association would be another way to get very cheap fertilizer (assuming your local allotment folk run one)

 

I also got myself about a dozen young Sorbaria plants from the parent plant that I planted in my mum's garden about 7 years ago. My young plants are between 4" and 18"; this is what they look like all grown up ;
