TPS has already been mention, good. The only thing I'd add is to get yourself a premium rate phone number. Then you can make money out of cold callers.

    http://www.premiumrateincome.co.uk/

Just answer the phone, if nobody talks, just leave the receiver on the side while you go for a brew. Instand £5 or so in your back pocket:)

I'm happy with the 'nuisance' calls because I'm more of a nuisance to them than they are to me :heehee:.
Unfortunately, Mrs Shiney is getting fed up with them

I've been with TPS for years and they're not much more use than a chocolate fireguard. They work well for any of the legitimate companies that may wish to call you, as those companies respect the TPS list. Most of the bad calls come from people that ignore the list and have unrecognisable phone numbers or withheld numbers.

So our new phone will be fixed to Mrs Shiney's line (we have separate lines) and I've started setting it up for her.

In its basic setting it will intercept all calls, without ringing, and ask for the name of the person calling. Then it will ring and announce who's calling. You then have a chance to accept, block, send to answerphone etc. If you already have the phone number in your address book it will come through without being intercepted.

You can set it up for all types of incoming calls from different types of phones. i.e. ordinary numbers, mobiles, phone boxes, international, withheld, unknown and CLI (Caller Line Identification - usually legitimate switchboards).

Most of the real nuisance calls are 'unknown' as their phones generate a false number that isn't remotely possible as a genuine number. These should be 'blocked' when you set up the phone. The phone then intercepts their call (without ringing) and tells them that they are blocked. You can set parameters for any of those categories.

Genuine callers that you haven't put into your address book will be, politely, asked who's calling before being passed to you and you can, by the press of a button, just accept or have their number automatically put into the address book - or block them or have them sent to answerphone. It's just like having your own receptionist. It works well if the mother-in-law calls and you don't want to speak to her :heehee:

Like ARMANDII, I just have my landline, and my mobile is very rarely turned on.

Being a stingy and grumpy old curmudgeon, if someone leaves a message on my answerphone asking me to call them on their mobile, they'll never get a call from me (except in certain circumstances). I don't call mobiles, because they are too expensive to call, and all my acquaintances know it. Landlines are 'free' for the cost of £5.48 per month and we average 200 calls a month.

Unfortunately, this doesn't work as their the cold callers' systems are set not to dial premium rate numbers. Good try, though :blue thumb: :roflol:

Sorry about my previous 'reply' ..... couldn't resist it :snork:
I get quite a few unwanted calls. It seems to change in frequency from provider to provider. When I was with BT, I didn't get many at all, despite my number always being the same. Now that I have gone with someone else, I get some very suspicious calls, and more of them. I have caller I.D. so now I just don't answer unless I recognise it. They do your head in :wallbanging:

Do you mean the one we 'borrowed' or the one with prop and engine damage? :heehee:

Talking of which, sitting at Douglas Head in the car this evening with a takeaway, we watched the ferry battling to come into the bay and harbour with a howling head wind, it took a good twenty minutes. I'm glad I wasn't on it, it was ducking and rolling all over the place. :eeew:
