I used to turn my phone off at night, now I leave it on but its downstairs so it can do whatever it likes, I wont hear it.
Have alarm clocks gone out of fashion?

It would take me hours trying to work out how to set an alarm on my phone.
I could be up all night sorting that out.

If you have the symbol of a clock on the phone, then click on it and set the alarm

I always turn my phone off at night and sleep very badly anyway. Since being a baby and for the following 55 years, I've always had problems with sleep, struggling to get to sleep and sleeping very lightly when I do. A butterfly breaking wind could wake me up!

Setting an alarm clock makes sleep even worse, as I wake multiple times for hours before the alarm, waiting for it to go off! I can be dead on my feet and still not be able to fall asleep.

On the plus side, I get lots done!

I don't have one of 'those' phones, but I certainly wouldn't keep it beside my bed. I still use an old fashioned, battery alarm clock @pete ;)
I have a kindle, which I bought for reading, but I don't like it for that. I use it for BBC sounds, catching up on stuff, and I have that in bed. I listen to episodes of comedy shows mainly, and I also found a site that has shows going back decades, which I also use. It just switches off once the prog's done, so if I fall asleep nothing else functions on it. If it takes me longer than one 30 minute show to fall asleep, I can find another, and that's usually enough.

I, fortunately, don't need an alarm clock. :)

I turn my phone off, but I rarely get calls anyway! Otherwise it occasionally beeps to say it has synchronised emails (I'm not sure what it is doing there). I have a smart phone and PAYG phone and the latter is always off 24/7.

I also use earplugs even though it's quite quiet here. Otherwise I'm alert to every noise. I've had poor sleep since age 55 and I think that's a woman thing. But I'm lost without my earplugs - they switch off the world.

But it is a good idea to switch phones off and then you subconsciously know the phone won't disturb you.

My smart phone cost me just £135 and I've had it just over 2 years. For the price I think it's fantastic. Best thing I've ever bought. And I hardly use it for phoning.

                Hope everyone gets some sleep

OH and I both have iPhones but they get turned off every night, as does the iPad, same for TV and kettle and downstairs lamps, :snooze: When we have to get up early, like others, an old fashioned alarm clock is used and, as like others, we’re forever waking up in the night wondering if the alarms has gone off! Sleep better without anything on….

Disturbed sleep when the alarm is set on the phone is nothing directly to do with the phone. It's down to subconsciously expecting the alarm to go off and worrying that you won't hear it. I do have my phone in the bedroom but since my bank started sending messages out at silly o'clock telling me a payment had gone in I put it in the draw of the bedside cabinet, unless I have the alarm set.
Most of the time I'd be perfectly happy with a dumb mobile phone for use in emergencies, but being able to read the newpaper over a cup of coffee when I'm out is useful.

That would be my worst nightmare, let alone sleep. Anything medical winds me up, so the only people that have access to my phone are family. It's for emergencies, and only turned on when I'm out and that's may be once a week. I have an old Nokia, I don't need more than that.

Any messages have to be left on my landline. Those of course would be daytime. No mobile so no psychological effect of subconsciously thinking about the possible messages or sounds emanating from it. I have a couple of friends that get highly agitated if their phone isn't within reach.

House rules here:- mobiles turned off or on silent and not visible during meals. Not to be looked at whilst conversation is occurring unless relevant to the conversation. If the person is 'on call' then it should be on vibrate and must be taken outside of the room.

In other words, you think there is no evidence that a turned on phone with no distraction would change the sleep if it's next to a bed.

Not quite true as you have some empirical evidence of your own experience. You just haven't, yet, found out whether that has been experienced, or researched, elsewhere.

I remember many years ago, perhaps in the 70s, a woman who could not be in the presence of anything electrical at all. It made her ill. She could sense electrical objects. In the end she died from "her condition".
