The orchids on the roadside verges round us are fantastic this year. In fact it's a fantastic year for wild flowers of all species, but I've never seen so many orchids. Just a tad annoyed that two of our farmer neighbours have mown very wide strips down their verges before any of the plants have set seed. It wasn't necessary: apart from the fact that the council had already mown a completely acceptable narrow strip, we're on a single track road witjh hardly any traffic. Never mind; there are a few ragged robin and orchids at the back so I'm sure they'll be back next year.

The bacterium in the soil that wild orchids need does not normally survive near where chemicals are used so a lot of modern gardens would be unsuitable anyway and the plant seeds are like dust.

We had a dilemma last year when we could no longer protect some of our bee orchids. Do we just destroy them when their habitat could no longer remain protected for them or do we try to find another home for them?

In the end we found someone who never uses chemicals in his garden and is a wild plant enthusiast. We not only dug out the orchids but removed them, carefully, in large sections of turf so that their immediate habitat went with them. This year they bloomed better than they had done in years :happydance:.
