@pete - my understanding is that they can randomly stop anyone with a dog and check to see if it is micro-chipped (think I read that somewhere). Don't believe the revenue from the fine is given to Vets?

I do know the Dogs Trust (and possible other animal rescue/charities) have been offering free micro-chipping events in preparation for the legislation coming into affect: http://www.chipmydog.org.uk/have-your-dog-chipped-for-free/

So, if you know any dog owners who feel they cannot afford to have it done, or are unaware it *needs* to be done, you would be doing them a service by letting them know ;)

A news article (Feb 2013) about it: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/pol...e-500-fine-for-failing-to-microchip-pets.html

I didn't mean the vets would get the fine money, I assume the government will get that, the vets will make a killing out of the sudden surge of people needing micro chipping done.

Are we to assume the dogs trust is paying the vets?

The vet I used to use did nothing for nothing, even tried to charge twice for certain things when I had my dog put down, it was only the insurance company who spotted it.

Pete, Dogs Trust, Blue Cross, Battersea Dogs Home (and maybe others) are all offering free micro-chipping and have been since the announcement in Feb 2013. So, yes, it will be the vets they use who will be doing it. They are holding events purely for that purpose and people who go along will get it for free. If they go to their own vets, then they will be charged the standard fee for their particular vet. So, you couldn't pop along to your own vet, get your pet chipped, then bill the Dogs Trust ;)

They could just be trained individuals that do it and not vets. Pets at home do microchipping you can choose to be trained to do it if you work there.

I don't know if any of you saw "Weighing Up the Enemy " its one of many weight loss programs on at this time a year. They do have a different spin on the concept but the reason I'm bringing this up is the guy featured yesterday is actually Meg's hairdresser :heehee: He is a good guy and although a private enterprise, still runs free micro-chipping clinics regularly.

I would love to see animal welfare given more priority but I fear with all the cuts, they will suffer along side the other most vulnerable in society :frown:
