    We can only hope :D

Pete, sorry for changing topic but, do you have any advice on germinating melon seeds?
Of course, now it is too late, but for the future it would be good to know.
They are the only seeds I was unable to germinate at all..
Pumpkins, new zealand spinach and 'beef and onion" gave me an hard time, but I managed a few plants in the end.
But my success rate with melon was null.. I tried in a propagator, soaking the seeds before hand, in paper towels. Not even one..

Aldo, can only say I've never found them a problem, just put the seed on edge about one inch down and put in propagator at about 25C.
If they dont come up in a week to 10 days they have rotted.

Out of interest, what is "Beef and Onion":)

Thanks, maybe I got a bad pack of seeds then, it was a bit disappointing..

Beef and Onion is the marketing name James Wong and Sutton's came up with a for a Chinese plant which can be consumed as a salad when small, but is a actually the seedling of a very large and fetching mahogany tree :)
I guess Chinese Mahogany Tree Salad did not sound quite as appetizing.

Allegedly the leaves (but only the spring leaves of the adult tree) taste like beef and onion crisps, and are widely used to cook in Asia.
I cannot yet vouch of the taste, given mine are still too small to pinch leaves, but they are part of my genial "now that I have a propagator let's get seeds!" plan. Which have led me to a house full of small pots which I have no garden space to transfer to, but anyway :D

Toona sinensis 'Flamingo' is an incredible tree with bright pink leaves

I've come across Toona before but never thought it was edible.;)

Think old Wongy gets a bit carried away at times with his seeds.:biggrin:

      I agree :D
Also, to be honest, while his book makes plenty of sense, in my limited understanding of gardening, Sutton's retails under his range a bunch of stuff he never really mentioned in the book :D
