one of my clients has a few hostas and uses the coffee grounds as she has birdfeeders/baths in her small garden, and refuses to use pellets....

I'm not sure how effective it is, as I still often sell slugs eating her hostas ...

I also read conflicting reports about using coffee grounds .... some have said that it 'may' alter the ph of the soil if used often?

I have had some success with the shells of beechmast mulched thickly around beans. The shells are quite spikey, rough and uneven so the slimey critters don't like to cross them. After the season is over I just hoe them in and they rot down.

I use Coffee Grounds at the base of the Roses as a feed. Saw it on Gardeners World some time ago.
