Hi all I have not been on the site for a long time but as you may guess with a name like slug bug you know the slugs BUG ME.
We have a pond and we used to have a frog but I think he has left home as he is sick of the variety of slugs & snails and must have moved elswhere.
Any I find I put in the garden waste bin, when I lift the lid if they have crawled to the top they get knocked down again.
Although they must not get much air I feel at least they have food so I dont feel so cruel.
There again when they are taken away they may end up in your next bag of multipupose compost recycled.OOps is this good or bad?

Happy gardening all, hope to use the site more often again. Us nurses lead a busy life.

Hi, as I've mentioned on another thread. I'm an organic gardener and when I moved into my house 16 years ago, the garden was a carpet of slugs and snails after dark.... it was very difficult for me to leave well alone at the time but I did. I'm not sure how long it took and how many thrushes I bribed to come and do their business but I now have a virtually slug and snail free garden. I also have a couple of hungry hedgehogs who must clear some but believe me patience is rewarded. On the other hand I have a friend who collects hers by the bucket load and puts them in the boot of her car and drives them out to the countryside to release them miles from home......... it takes all sorts doesn't it! Please, please, don't use the slug pellets.I work as a veterinary nurse and the number of hedgehogs we see dying from metaldyhide poisoning is high, it causes them to have fits and is a horrible way to die. feed the birds, perhaps if you have room dig a small pond and encourage natural predators into your garden, you have to be a bit patient and let the numbers of birds, frogs establish then they will do all the work for you. Mother nature is a wonderful thing if left to her own devices

Well said Poppy33! I hope everyone on GC will take note. Your message also answers those people who said they had never seen a hedgehog eating slugs and snails. Can you not get the vets to try for a nationwide ban on slug pellets?

Hi Hornbeam, I only wish we could get those dam pellets banned. Unfortunatly people seem to want a quick fix...they don't see the bigger picture.I,like yourself am an organic gardener,I have a pond, insect houses around the garden, and log piles...and no slug damage. On a different note, I must say how much I enjoy your photos, keep them coming.

    Hi Poppy,
Yes it's the quick fix and the instant solution that people go for. Too many people see instant television garden make overs by designers who know nothing about gardening. So they go to the garden centres, buy plants in bloom, dig holes and then scatter pellets as thick as confetti "just in case" Perhaps photos and video sequences of hedgehogs in agony and deformed frogs might help to spread the message.

Best wishes and thanks for all that you do. [IMG]
