When we went to Rome we did what we normally do when arriving in a big city for the first time, head to the tourist information office. The one in Rome was like no other, there were no glossy leaflets nor brochures nor any sullen staff avoiding eye contact, instead it was full of smart men in military uniform who immediately pounced on us as we walked in. They couldn't do enough to help, I asked for a bus timetable and they laughed in my face, through their tears they explained that in Italy there was no need to publish such useless information, the buses run when they run was the gist, followed by a couple of friendly slaps on my back to help me understand. He was right :) That was our first taster and it only got better after that, lovely people and food :)

I loved Rome, spent 2 nights in a convent there, sleeping on wooden benches & eating soup.

Sleeping on wooden benches & eating soup. Not much else to do in a convent apart from praying.

At the age of ten, praying that the 20 year old tour guide would notice me [IMG]
