If I had one of those gifted to me I would try and find a use for it. I should imagine the biggest problem is over-heating if placed in direct sunshine. Provided it has vents then It's not much different to a cloche just nicer looking.

Agreed @JWK ...its not a case of wither other folks warm to its unique shape or infact what it pretends to be..if you like it and it means something to you then why not try to use it in some form or fashion. The question was how to heat it......not to judge it...Admittedly its not to everyone's taste..there are weirder things at Chelsea....that said if it's there to be used then do so...I wish you every success

and I think you have answered that admirably @BigC. I'm tempted to experiment with your 100hr candle over winter.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think everyone has valid points and helpful tips. Since it’s not costing me anything, and since I’m not planning on raising anything in it over winter, just using it to try protect existing plants from the frost, I think it’s worth a shot. Can’t be any worse than leaving them out.
I’ll try the terracotta pot idea and see how it goes.
At the moment it’s my only option as our house isn’t conducive to keeping plants inside right now

              Hi Greg C

First of all, the terracotta pot heating idea I saw here is genius, bloody love it!
I got another idea for heating without a mains supply though - a portable propane heater.
I'm not sure if one would fit in there, I was having a look here: The Best Shed Heaters of 2018 - A Comprehensive Guide

(I think its an American site but maybe you can get one in the UK?) The first one they listed called Mr. Heater looks like a pretty decent solution to your issue if it fits ok and doesn't blast your plants too heavily and too close with heat.
