Thats the trouble, its a double edged sword. If the thermoclines switch off due to increased fresh water runoff from melting glaciers then the north atlantic conveyor will stop.s00k

Is that what happened about 30,000 years ago? And then the clouds stayed forever and the rain came hiding the sun, and it got colder and colder and that kicked off the ice age...

I'm getting seriously freaked out about going to work next week. I have some traction aids for my shoes and am seriously thinking of getting some snow chains for the car. Our roads are that bad and as I sit here watching people driving in and out of the close, skidding around all over the place, it doesn't give me any confidence. If a 4x4 skids, what chance my little Corsa?

btw, anyone had any experience using snow chains? What happens when you get to road that's clear? Do they damage the tyres or the road? Affect braking?

Over in this part of the world, we are getting flurries right now, but calling for squalls to start around supper, and we've had some flash freezing too.

That's how I remember it!!! :hehe: :lollol:

I used to have them for my car as we regularly got snowed in. Depending on the type of snow chains they can be quite fiddly to put on and off. They can damage your tyres if you run on clear roads for too long but short journeys are OK. I think, but not sure, it may be illegal to drive on clear roads with them as they can damage the road.

Hi Daisees, my only experience driving myself with snow chains has been in the USA & there you have to stop & remove them when you come of a snow area......
I did find this Daisees.. http://www.snowchains.co.uk/main/qanda.html but if you are a member of AA or RAC contact them....
Good luck driving in this weather as it is nerve wrecking..!!! :gnthb: Let us know if you try chains though...

I have just seen a forecast for Mon/tues giving a snow/blizzard warning down here as a wet and windy low is coming up from Portugal/Spain and hitting the cold air over us.:(
    I'll hibernate for a few days.:D

Hi Daisees, when I was a kid living in the sticks people put on snow chains. Don't know what happened on clear roads - we never went as far as that or saw any of them.
But seriously, they are a big fiddle faddle to put on - so only to be used to enable a journey which is absolutely necessary, not a trip to M & S.
And I don't think you're allowed to drive on clear roads with them - ripping up the surface as you go.

"Bei uns zu hause" (I don't know how to say it in english: here at my home where I and my people live), the snow has arrived early this morning.
It is rather strange as it is still November...
The cold stream that has gone down from Scandinavia and invaded the whole Europe, has overgone the Alps and brought cold air to northern Italy.
This morning I woke up with this "scenario".

Thanks for the advice re snow chains but they are somewhat academic now as I looked out of the window at midnight and since 10pm we've had 6" of snow! This is what it looks like right now - at 3am! At 10pm, the drive was completely clear and the plants weren't covered!

(First two are without flash, third is with flash)

Even my satellite dish got covered so I had no tv! I had to reach out of the window with a pole to push the snow off the receiver! Never imagined having to do something like that!

 I don't belieeeeeeeve it! Forecast has just said it's going to stay like this for ten days!
    :help:
Well that does it, no way am I going to work when the police are putting out calls for people not to drive unless it's totally unavoidable.
