Despite it snowing on and off for 3 days and consistent overnight temperatures of -4 or below there is no ground frost. The cars are not frozen and the roads and paths are bone dry. It’s most peculiar. It’s actually ideal winter conditions. It looks pretty and is not disruptive. It’s the wind that’s the killer. It’s bitter and it cuts right through you.

No ground frost? I think it's because the air is coming from a dry Siberia.
It is peculiar weather though....these temperatures, this snow, etc is far from normal for us. It is likely to be even more peculiar later today when a storm, ironically carrying warm air, will hit us and wreak havoc with freezing rain when it says hello to the Beast from the East

10.20am and its still minus 4 here with light snow, but the stuff on the roofs and the ground is getting blown around quite a lot.
Got stuck on a slope trying to get out onto the road, from the farm, last night.
So given work a miss today.:Wino:

It's been snowing over night and it's still snowing... slightly..

                        P1010092.JPG

The wildlife are organised. The squirrel cleared the snow off the bird feeder in the rose pot in the centre foreground, so the birds could get their breakfast.

I've a hazardous journey to attempt later...negotiating Sainsbury's car park. Lucky I've got four wheel drive, or I could be in trouble.

I've had an e-mail from my golf club, because of the snow, the club council are offering help if I needed someone to get shopping, medication, change for the gas meter, etc.,

It would appear to be a nice personal thought, but sadly, 350 other people would have got the same e-mail.

I'm actually on stand-by for some friends. The guy that lost a leg and his wife who has failing eyesight and can't drive any more.

@Verdun not ironic, an interesting phenomenon. I'll try to explain.

Freezing rain occurs when hot air flows in and pushes out cold air. As the hot air wall "leans" ie, its not vertical, the cold air drives in under the warm. That creates a layer of warm air at the top and a cold air layer underneath.

Snow falling from the hot air layer will melt and turn into rain. When the rain reaches the colder air layer it cools. If the cold air layer closest to the ground has temperatures below zero, the rain "freezes." If the air layer is sufficiently thin, the rain can not freeze to ice, but remains liquid. Only turning to ice when it hits the ground.

Believe it or not, under laboratory conditions scientists have cooled water down to -40C or thereabouts without it turning to ice.
