I finally bought some new wellies a couple of years ago, they were nowhere near the quality of those I'd had for thirty years, which had finally worn out.
Even these were recycled. At the time I was managing a large departmental store and each Christmas we hired for children visiting the extensive toy department, an animated "ride." Sometimes, Santa's Sleigh, or Noah's Ark with real water "rain" falling past the windows etc., and we always had a Father Christmas's Grotto.
Digressing... each year a few directors would turn up on a "visit" before the opening of the grotto to "have a go" on the ride. It always amused me..

Anyway... "Father Christmas" was always given a completely new uniform including a new pair of wellies from the footwear department.
So I "recycled" a pair of those in January. Sadly (for the kids) the ride and the grotto were eventually discontinued as it was more profitable to devote the space to merchandise.

To pre-empt the jokes, I was not, repeat not Father Christmas!

"I think he was saying 'tongue in cheek'."

Of course! Wouldn't wish horsetail on my worst enemy. Actually, thinking of my worst enemy, maybe I would...

As to treats - I think I'm going to buy some timber and felt and build a little lean-to to store firewood for the chimnea.

Thanks for that, I've got this thing against smilies. I give people credit for being able to suss out the jokes without them, as I never I hope, say anything to anyone which could be construed as offensive.

It dates back to the change in the BBC boards when the useful facility to type; this, this, this, this, this, this and this became unavailable and were replaced by naffin' smilies.

    Talk about dumbing down.

After all even Shakespeare managed to write comedies without smilies.

    Hehe excellent, Claralou!

Thinking about it, this thread could be the first time I've used a 'smiley'. I've got the same aversion to them as you, Doghouse.

I used to hate them but now I don't mind a few on an informal thread. I think the time to seek treatment is when you find yourself putting sad faces on begging letters to the bank manager.

I think that smilies can be useful in clarifying meanings. Over the years I have seen members of fora banned for having upset others unintentionally. Their sense of humour was a bit on the caustic side and some members took offence. Amazingly this escalated out of proportion. Just putting a smilie in would have had an ameliorating influence. :)

That's obvious! It tells you how good your amelios are.

Well, I broke my spade earlier today, it was about twenty years old and had a cracked handle and a new one set me back £7.99 in the local corner DIY shop. Probably would have been about fifteen quid in B&Q.

I inherited my spade from my father. They don't make them like they used to. He said he bought it in 1927 and he gave it to me in 1972. Since then I have only had to do repairs on it. Two new handles and one new blade.
