Great info Wayne. I didn't realise any Brugs flowered horizontally. I just assumed that they all hung down. They are not the easiest plants to tell apart.

galaxy1.jpg galaxy2.jpg galaxy.jpg The sun decided to come out for a day, just at the right time for my US hybrid named Galaxy to show itself. I drooled over this for a while, and got lucky. Hope you like her as much as I do.

Lovely colour Wayne - and very pronounced tails (or whatever you call them).

I am finding that in this cold weather last year's sticks are being very slow into growth. I keep feeling that plants grown from seed would grow faster than last years plants. Though that is probably not true.

Pete...the word you are looking for is tendrils...but also known as " Twanger's "
I know not why?? but like the word..
You'd be right about the growth from seed, it's all about nitrogen for them and going from seedling to juvenile to adult. And that can take almost 2 years to flower, that's why I prefer top growth ( Adult) cutting above the fork. Smaller plants to overwinter that will flower almost guaranteed.
( I've still got lots of Brug seedlings, though!) ! :help:

At last I am getting some blooms on a number of my Brugmansias. For both of these two its their second flush of the year.

God, they are looking good Peter.

Wish mine would make a move, I'm going from set back to setback with Brugs, RSM, caterpillars, root rot, you name I've had problems with it this year.

What is the difference between Brugmansia and Datura?

Not sure about the botanical difference Val, but in general Brug flowers hang down Dats face upwards.
Brugs tend to be fairly long lived shrubs, whereas Dats are usually short lived perennials, or herbaceous perennials and I think a few Dats are really just annuals.

They used to both be classed under the one name of Datura - so occasionally you get people who still call Brugmansia Datura. But they are now separated.

As Pete said the flowers hang differently. Datura flowers are often violet, which is a colour never seen in Brugmansia. Datura are short - perhaps 3 feet, but Brugmansias are really trees that can reach 20 feet. I have to cut mine back to 6 feet every autumn to get them through the door to overwinter them.

Even here, Brugs are long lived and Dats at only two or three years.
