some interesting "basil" plants

    That will be made easier with my compost, which holds water very well... Other sites say they don't like to sit in water, hence the well-drained thought.
    All in all, a difficult plant to pin down!

      Just wondering if you are able to split it in two?
      Then you could try one in moist soil and one in well-drained.

        Not sure if you can make it out from from the photo, but it seems to be one root, or rhizome. Certainly seems to have grown, and to be happy, so far though?? image.jpg

        In fact, seems to be thriving the most from the three plants, whilst the Thai basil doesn't seem so certain of its new home (may well try splitting that pot, and see what we can come up with!) image.jpg (I've had my morning coffee now:coffee:)

          Hmm, yes, seems that way (one root).
          Yes the Thai may benefit from being split ... but, to be fair Sian, the reason it may be taking longer to settle in *could* be .... because you're not sharing the coffee! :whistle:

            Fascinating thread! I've tried wasabi 'cos I'm too lazy to dig up the horseradish:redface:...it's delicious. Sounds like a prime candidate for the polytunnel now the cucamelons have been banished:heehee: Off to Google whether annual, biennial, perennial, and how to prepare it!                 Well, now our visitors have been taken home, it is time to be s little more adventurous.

                This evening, we are going to try one of the wasabi plant's leaves, shredded and mixed through the salad....

                Interesting thread. @Sian in Belgium can I ask what the basil on the right of your trio picture is actually called. I am growing it for the first time in England and find it is the best basily-basil taste but it is just sown as 'basil' here as far as I know. I have grown this sort in Spain and there it grows like a weed. The one I am growing here is not growing much though it looks healthy, is that normal for this sort of basil?
                I've not seen the Thai one locally but will look out for it as that sounds tasty.

                Ah yes @Gay Gardener , that is Greek basil.
                I agree, it has a very good flavour, which is why I was so glad to get such a good plant. It also looks absolutely lovely when used as a garnish, because it is so delicate. I have tried to grow some from seed (basil Aristotle), but the seedlings dampened off, so even happier to have now three bushy plants, after a tactical splitting session. I don't remember seeing it for sale in the UK, although very occasionally can find it here in Belgium.
                The Thai basil - again, not seen that before, so it's new to us. The plant seems to be quite sensitive to stress, although seems to be a lot happier now hat we have divided it. Not used it much in cooking yet, but I'm sure we will soon!
