Hey @BB3 (or should I say B3)? ; the fleshy white bulbs seem to spread also by underground slimy rhizomatous appendages .
I spent many hours last week digging hundreds of the bloody things out ; (amidst frequent cursing of course )

Only five years? I've been at it for probably 25 or so - a regular job every spring, digging out what I can and pulling/slicing the foliage off any where I can't get to the bulbs. They were here when we bought the house but at first I wasn't much of a gardener (not at all, if I'm honest) and I thought they were pretty. They are, but boy do they spread and by the time I realised that they were swamping my other plants .......

Don't bother trying to dig them out. The roots are probably poking through the sky in Australia.
Slice off the leaves and do something more interesting in your garden.

Or pick the flowers for indoors and then chop down the leaves. They’re usually out earlier than the native bluebell in my garden so there’s minimum cross pollination.

It was, indeed, a bluebell and it is no more. It has gone to a better place - aka the compost heap.

The leaves are OK on the compost heap but I wouldn't put the bulbs in there. I don't think a domestic heap/bin will be hot enough to kill them and they'll most likely just keep growing.

Edit - how long has your profile pic been Queenie? I only just noticed!

                Queenie a few days.
I never get down as far as the bulbs. I've got short arms! @JennyJB

Definitely Spanish bluebell. Certainly in our new garden we have plenty coming through.
For me, in north Kent, it's far too early for an agapanthus bud to be showing, and certainly mine don't look like that.
