:) Yes Mr.and Mrs. Shiney(Michael and Hannar)certainly know how to entertain and make their guests feel very special.

They have lovely gardens which Michael gave us a personal guided tour.
Of course most forum members have seen the lovely pictures of his gardens and his lovely lawns.

They gave us lunch in their beautiful summerhouse, and the food was scummy :thumb:.

The highlight for me and Mrs. Roders was when Hannah read us all a poem by the once poet laureate Robert Southey,an ancestor of Mrs.Roders.

It was great to talk to Michael about the beautiful Lake District as he is by way of an expert having written a book on easy walks up there of which he very generously gave us a copy....bless him.

Yes it did rain a bit,but we all agreed that the gardens needed it so badly, but what's a bit of rain between gardeners?
When I got home though ,we had hardly any .

So thats a big thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Shiney for their generosity.

And another big thank you for their charity work, which was the whole object of the exercise.
    Take care both xx.

Shiney, sorry we didn't make it today :( As I said in my message to you, not a great day for biking (at least here in Sussex) and with my motorbike needing two new tyres, I definitely didn't want to risk it in the rain.

But really glad you had a good day and maybe we'll get there tomorrow. If not, here's wishing you every success :)

Thanks roders for your very kind words :o :). All the GC members that turned up were very nice and we appreciate the effort you made to get here.

Some members tried to get here but got caught in the horrendous M25 traffic. According to the news there were many accidents all round the M25. This also caused a backup onto the M11 near us. :(

Aaron, sorry to hear about your bike needing new 'shoes' and hope that it can tread properly in the near future. Hope you are able to make it today :gnthb:

The sun is shining and the 'hour by hour' forecast is partly cloudy with a low chance of rain :thmb:

Yesterday, it drizzled in the morning and rained fairly heavily in the afternoon which was a big change from the hot sun all day of last year's open day. Even with the difference in weather we have still exceeded last year's income :yho:. I'll do a proper tally this evening - anyone want hundreds of pennies and five pence pieces :hehe:

Right, shiney - get up off your bum and get out there and mop the rain off all the tables and chairs and tidy up the plant sale area. :( :D

    Hi Everyone,

Yesterday's weather was quite bright but very windy. We had a good turn out (only open in the afternoon) and have, finally, tallied up all the takings etc. The charity are going to end up with over £2,600 :yho: :yho:

There will be small amounts of money trickling in from plant sales over the next couple of months (and the sale of runner beans, tomatoes and courgettes if our crop is good enough) so the charity will end up with a bit more than that.

Yesterday morning we had two very nice people turn up from the NGS (Yellow Book) asking us to go in their book and open for them :o :). It is a compliment that we much appreciated but had to turn them down as we want all our takings to go to our chosen charity.

We shall be opening at the same time next year (Bank Holiday Saturday and Sunday at the end of May) and hope that even more of you can join us then.

Just over 380 people (plus children) came during the weekend and the grass seems to have stood up to it very well. I reckon it will have recovered by next week.

Mrs shiney had worked very hard for weeks beforehand and she sold over £1,000 worth of plants.

Oscar enjoyed having all the visitors to his garden k-l but the moment it started raining on Saturday he dissappeared into his house in the greenhouse. He was very gracious to all the people who went in there to give him a stroke. :)

We give a big thank you to all our helpers who were marvellous and without their help we couldn't do it. Friends and people from the charity baked cakes and also came to help in the kitchen, take money at the entrance, sell raffle tickets on the weekend, help with the plant sales and generally run around keeping everything organised. The charity brought tables and chairs and turned up again at the close on Sunday to collapse the tables and take away all the tables and chairs (I didn't have to do any of the heavy work).

Mrs shiney ran the plant stall, explained all about the plants, gave gardening advice, gave advice on which plants people should have for the areas of their gardens they wanted to fill and is even going to plant up some of their beds. :gnthb:

I had the easy job of wandering around talking to people and doing nothing - something that I am highly qualified at :rotfl: :rotfl:

    Thanks for your support :thumb:

    We have just arrived home.

We had a fantastic day at Shineys and I must say thanks to Mr and Mrs Shiney who went out of their way to make us welcome even to the point of inviting us out in the evening :)

Their garden is gorgeous and a tribute to all the hard work they put into it. I even met Oscar.

I am soooo pleased you have raised so much money and you are both a very giving couple. Pictures to follow.....:gnthb:
If anyone is thinking of going next year it is well worth the time. Thanks again Mr and Mrs Shiney :luv:

When NatalieB arrived she not only brought some of her family but also some slabs of her wonderful banana bread :thumb:. One of the people who were running the tea and cakes said that someone liked it so much that they bought one of the slabs. Well done NatalieB :gnthb:
