Went to Quince's Honey Farm this morning.

Watched as a worker was stuck upside down, looked like her wing had hit something sticky. One by one, other bees tried to get her the right way up but couldn't, eventually 4 of them got together & pushed her the right way up.

                              Update time

With all this poo weather both the hives have swarmed I normaly check every 7 days but with all the wind and rain I coudnt check them so I went on the 9th or 10th day and both hives had swarmed taking the orignal queens bee with them I have never had this in 15 years of keeping them with this year queen 2012 being young and fresh all I can put it down too is the weather.

So that left me with queen cells in both hives , not a disaster more a setback , any way to cut a very long story short I had to leave them alone for 20 days I went on Saturday hoping to find baby bee eggs and larvea , but nothing !! it may be they havnt started to lay yet or have been waiting for some sun to fly out and about attracting the lads (Drones male bees)to mate somtimes it takes a while for them to start laying.
I will go down on Wednesday and check through all the frames , I have made enquires and can get my hands on New fully fertile Welsh Queen bees that are suitable to the weather here in Wales , but alas no honey for Spruce this year.

I will make up two new (nucs) small hives and introduce the queens to the bees in small cages and then release them after two days otherwise the worker bees know its not their mother and may kill her straight away , once she has her own daughters around her I can put all the frames back into the original hives , I know it all sounds complecated and have tried my best to write it so you can understand a little easier any questions please ask .

I will keep you all posted as they are the official GC Bee Hives of the Forum.

Many thanks for this interesting update Spruce. I would imagine that the difficulties your bees are experiencing may well be the same for many other bee keepers' bees. I think I will go out and buy some more honey whilst stocks last.
