@ARMANDII Mr. S has just spotted a planet/star. I've briefly been outside to see if I could get a shot but unfortunately hand held I can't keep the camera still and it's a bit late to start setting up my tripod....it's also perishing at -4C/25F.

The 'object' is roughly SSW, fairly low in the sky with the base of Orion to it's right and the moon above that. About 7 o'clock on a time piece in comparison to the moon. Any ideas please? It looks quite colourful through my lens.

Just to get the orientation right, Sheal, would that be to your left of the base of Orion as you're looking at it? If so it will more than likely be Sirius

If it is Sirius then look to your right upwards from Sirius in a straight line to the Moon and between both you should see a reddish Star which is Betelgeuse.

That's right Armandii. Oops! I mean yes it's to my left. :snorky:

So, Sirius and Betelgeuse. I'll take a look tomorrow.

A slight change of orientation of Sirius, the Moon, and Betelgeuse since 24 hours changes the positions of the Stars and the Moon. So Sirius, at around 7pm, will be low on the horizon just under the Moon, Betelgeuse, [the Red Star],:heehee: is now to your right of the Moon and 45 degrees down. But halfway between the Moon and Sirius, to your left, is Procyon, which is another bright star.

I've just come in and with the moon sitting almost above Sirius my camera decided not to play ball. Having an EVF it just kept clicking in and out of focus and range. Very disappointed. :frown:

I took a fair number of images and this is the best of the bad bunch, sadly. It looks more like a sequin on a black dress.

It's a consequence of being out of focus, if it's taken to an extreme you get a doughnut shape with a black hole in the middle.:dunno::heehee:

Not a problem Martin. :) Yes, I can see the circles Gail, that's where the sequin was stitched on. :snorky:

I've spent most of the night in and out of the Observatory trying to get the Telescope Mount to track without a guide scope and guiding software correctly by keeping a Star exactly in the center of the target screen for more than 10 minutes. Everything I tried seemed to make things worse no matter what I tried :wallbanging:so, after 3 hours, I put all settings back to their original state and within seconds I had it tracking exactly on target for 20 minutes............a case of trying too hard, I guess:dunno::heehee: The longest exposures I take are multiples of 60 seconds but usually it's multiples of 10 seconds so things are looking good:hapfeet::hapydancsmil:
